As Senior HR Business Partner with MWI Animal Health, my role is quite varied which allows for rewarding and challenging opportunities. No two days are alike.
I work with the MWI Leadership Team in alignment of business strategy; provide leadership and development to a team of 12, and partner with AmerisourceBergen corporate colleagues and center of excellence to deliver business goals and objectives.
Day-to-day varies depending on the demands of the business and projects I'm involved in but can include talent management/succession planning-reviewing talent and identifying gaps to develop associates to build a solid pipeline for the organization, provide learning and growth opportunities by utilizing the organization's resources, mergers and acquisitions, coaching to client group on Business/HR key initiatives/business drivers, and associate relations, change management (leading the business through change), review of compensation structure, recruitment-ensuring alignment with business needs and requirements.
The skills that have served me well in my career are having solid business acumen, understanding the business, the key business drivers and culture of the client group I have supported; being flexible/adaptable in a constantly changing environment; Integrity-staying true to my values and personal/professional ethics, collaboration – working across the organization to get work accomplished to meet business goals and objectives; verbal and written communication; attention to detail; ability to multiple task and prioritization; focus on the customer-doing what it takes to take care of the customer without compromising quality; being results-driven; respect for the individual; hard work; and staying abreast of the Human Resources profession.
What I like about my role is the variety, the people I work with, the culture and knowing what the organization/associates do makes a difference in other people's and animal's lives.
Being confident in the skills and experiences learned while in the military were transferrable in what I do in Human Resources and choosing a career that aligns with those skills and what I enjoy.
When I was deciding to get my graduate degree, I weighed and balanced what was the right source of action to take, and getting my degree was the best decision I could have made. There is a lot of competition, and having the degree with the experience was a plus.
Not feeling defeated if I did not get a position, I would always say it was not the right role for me. Also, realizing that I may have to take a lesser role to get into the organization and prove myself.
When applying for positions, do research on the organization. To prepare for an interview, bring a copy of your resume for each interviewer, bring a list of questions to ask the interviewer(s), maintain proper eye contact, and be confident and thorough with examples when answering questions. In addition, I always dressed professionally no matter what level of position I was applying for. Send thank you notes to each person you interviewed with.
Began military career in January of 2004 by joining the US Army Reserve in freshman year.
Deployed to Iraq from August 2004 to August 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Graduated Temple University with B.A. in Information Science and Technology in 2008 and joined Tasty Baking Company as a Systems Developer (MS SQL Server, SAP ABAP, C# .NET)
Joined AmerisourceBergen in 2012.
My role here at AmerisourceBergen as an SAP Basis Administrator is to ensure that all business systems (both SAP and non-SAP) which we support are configured correctly, up to date on software patch levels, and run efficiently on our company's infrastructure to maximize performance per business needs. My day to day skills include installing new SAP applications that run on SAP's ABAP or Java stack, monitor database and file system capacity, install software patches per SAP recommendations, and monitor incoming requests from the business to remediate issues that could affect performance or stability. I find that having a software developer background as well as some experience with system administration is a great combination of skills to have when troubleshooting issues affecting any of our systems. I am able to examine a technical issue from multiple aspects when presented with the given hardware, software and network specifications. This helps me to decrease the amount of time needed to find the resolution and spend more time on implementing a fix.
My advice to fellow veterans is to network as much as you can with both military personnel and civilians to make as many connections as possible. Having the experience listed on a resume is sometimes not enough to help prospective employers determine if he/she is a good candidate.
