About

I was fortunate enough to earn two bachelor’s degrees while still on active duty in the Navy. I then went on to earn an Executive MBA at my first civilian job. While I haven’t used this great benefit, Fiserv offers a tuition reimbursement program that helps employees who are looking to further their education in an effort to achieve their career goals.

I manage a department of 27 project and program managers in the execution of software development projects. I’m responsible for ensuring that we meet performance metrics of things like cost, quality, and schedule for the portfolio of projects within the Bank Solutions Division. I’m also responsible for developing and implementing sound project management methodologies and best practices.

At Fiserv, I get to work with a great group of people each and every day. My favorite thing is just that - the people.

Advice

Although there are a lot of similarities between military and civilian life, there are differences. Just like we were asked in the military to "adapt," there might be a need for a veteran to adapt to the civilian ways of doing things. Just remember -- just because it's different doesn't mean that it's wrong or bad. Go into it with an open mind and look for opportunities to offer up ideas that serve to make your company as good as it can be.

Takeaways

In the Navy we had 150 unique individuals -from all walks of life - on the submarine, each possessing their own unique set of skills and experiences. We were expected to work together - across departments to achieve the single common goal of operating the submarine.

Time management, collaboration and team work are all keys to my success. I feel that being in the Navy helped to strengthen these skills. Being in project management means you have to be able to effectively manage not only your time but the time of others. You also have to have the ability to work with people from different departments on common goals/deliverables.

It's no different in Fiserv. We have many associates from all walks of life, working in different departments with different skill sets and experience levels, all working towards the common goal of delivering high quality products to our clients and increasing shareholder return on their investment.
