Grainger is proud to support veteran organizations in the local community. Partnerships include:
American Red Cross
We also support a variety of organizations, including veteran, through the Grainger Matching Charitable Gifts Program.
Grainger also has a Veteran and Military Supporters Business Resource Group (BRG) that supports our team members who are Military, Guard and Reserve, as well as their Military spouses. In addition, we offer the Grainger Tools for Tomorrow® scholarship program, which awards financial assistance for tuition and books to outstanding students earning an associate's degree or certificate in the fields of electrical, plumbing, welding, facilities maintenance, machine technology, electronic systems, automotive repair and other industrial programs. One-half of the scholarships awarded each year are reserved for Military Veteran students.
One thing that I enjoy more than anything is helping my customers solve real business problems and feeling like the products and services that I provide make a difference. At Grainger, I have a select group of Higher Education, Healthcare, Federal, State and Local Government accounts that are assigned to me, and it is my responsibility to help them achieve their business goals. Since this is a sales job, it's not a surprise that each of my assigned account is expected to grow their sales. It's my job to find ways to make that happen. I am competitive by nature so for me this position is rather rewarding. I would recommend this type of role for anyone who is outgoing, competitive, enjoys a challenge and would enjoy working closely with customers to solve problems.
Don't underestimate how valuable a relationship is when it comes to employment opportunities or referrals. Leverage your relationships to the fullest. Have a sense of self-awareness of"your own skill sets. Are you competitive and can you speak to people? Sales could be something that works for you. Another recommendation is to learn about the culture of the company you are thinking of joining. Be confident and choose a company that has a great reputation for hiring and valuing veterans. Grainger truly values their veterans and was just recognized in Fortune Magazine's 2015 Most Admired Companies in the World.
My role as a Territory Sales Representative is to work with our customers to develop a more strategic partnership and help them understand how Grainger can reduce cost in their business through our services and product availability. My day-to-day is ever changing. I typically make 3-4 hard appointments and have a high level plan for the remainder of the day. With over 300 customers there is sure to be someone with an emergency almost every day. I try to remain flexible and adjust my day as needed to help those with critical needs. For the times when we get to sit down and talk, my time is spent understanding what is driving their business and how the local economy is impacting their production or sales. This allows me to share insight with other customers, ultimately becoming a better support to each of them.
My biggest piece of advice for reservist or guardsmen is to keep your customers informed with anything going on with your military career. The more I share with my customers about my upcoming trainings, my unavailability and changes in the military for policy or procedure, the more they feel connected. I find a lot of veterans appreciate working with someone who is still involved with the military and enjoy having a conversation about the military vs. reading about changes online.
