A national health and wellness organization as well as the second largest integrated delivery and financing system (IDFS) in America, Highmark Health and our leading health care businesses employ more than 43,000 talented people who serve millions of Americans in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Our consolidated revenue grew to $18.8 billion as of year-end 2018.
At Highmark Health, we recognize that American health care urgently needs breakthrough solutions and new visionaries to champion change, and we've stepped up to be leaders and catalysts in that quest. Our vision is a world where everyone embraces health, and our mission is to create a remarkable health care experience, freeing people to be their best. We begin by putting customers at the center of everything we do, and seeing health care through their eyes. Our customers include individuals, families, businesses, and government entities who we empower through outstanding products, services, and solutions. Their ever-changing wants and needs are priority one.
Getting health care right
Next, we keenly focus on getting health care right. Through our position as an IDFS, we're uniquely organized to transform health care — and we're leveraging that opportunity to pioneer new models, key partnerships and investments, and groundbreaking science that are delivering measurably greater value and a better health experience to customers. Still and yet, our plans for the future are bold and ambitious.
Finally, we are committed to transforming the health care industry to work better now and for generations to come — providing improved access, higher standards of quality and safety, greater affordability and better health outcomes that free our customers to live their best lives.
More than a 170-year legacy
Though Highmark Health as an organization is relatively new (2013), some of our affiliates and their predecessors have proud legacies of more than 170 years of providing care and philanthropy in the community. This tradition of giving back, reinvesting and ensuring that our communities remain strong and healthy is deeply embedded in our culture, and we are proud to continue to meet many needs within the communities we serve.
