Senior Financial Analyst
U.S. Marine Corps - Staff Sergeant, Aviation Electronic Technician

I served from 1998-2003, was stationed in MCAS New River, my unit was HMM 162, and I am an Iraqi Freedom Veteran. After being Honorably discharged in 2003 I returned to Chicago to go to college. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2010. I began working at Walgreens in April of 2014 as a Senior Accountant, and have recently accepted a position as a Senior Financial Analyst in the Results and Planning Department.

In my new role I will be part of a team that looks to increase value and forecast accuracy for Walgreens, by looking for opportunities to increase efficiency and effectiveness. What attracted me to this new position is the opportunity to find areas for improvement. As a AVI tech in the Marines my job was to fix aircraft in a safe and efficient manner learning from every maintenance task to spot recurring problems. I believe that this new role will be similar in that fashion, find faults and fix them.

The civilian world is very different than the military, I realized this the moment I needed to register for classes, unlike the military where all a Marine has to do is show up and report for duty in the civilian world the logistics are all on you. Understand that the majority of people have no clue what your skillsets are, nor understand the level of responsibility you had as a servicemen.

Without my degree I would not have been able to land this position. It was my service that allowed me to attend college and not worry about how I was going to pay for my education.
