The Associate Principal Scientist, Flow Chemistry, is responsible for development and implementation of novel flow chemistry and continuous processing technologies to ensure the design and development of robust, sustainable and efficient API manufacturing processes. Nature and Scope of Position
The Associate Principal Scientist, Flow Chemistry reports to a Director, Process Research & Development in the Merck Research Laboratories organization. This role requires laboratory chemistry execution using flow working closely with multidisciplinary teams comprised of chemical engineers, analytical and synthetic organic chemists. The candidate, as part of the flow chemistry team is responsible for advancing an internal culture of scientific excellence, identifying emerging trends and in defining the field based on fundamental mechanistic and engineering principles.
Critical tasks involve enabling new chemical transformations and influencing route design. The broader flow chemistry team also supports API campaigns at lab, pilot and manufacturing scale. Candidates must be passionate about establishing themselves as a flow chemistry and continuous processing subject matter expert with the Process Chemistry Department, and must be enthusiastic to mentor those new to the field. Maintaining a strong external network in the academic community is expected.Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering or related field
- A minimum of 2 years industrial experience.
- Working knowledge of flow chemistry
- Must have conducted outstanding research in his/her field of expertise that may be shared during the interview process.
- Demonstrated history of high impact publications and presentations.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Strength in delivering results on firm deadlines.
- Demonstrated fluency in organic chemistry principles
- Experience in electrochemistry or photochemistry
- Working knowledge of gas-liquid reactions
- Familiarity in programming and lab automation
