The Automation Specialist at the Shire bio-manufacturing facility in Milford, MA is responsible for operating and maintaining automation, mechanical, electrical and utility systems at a high level of safety, compliance and reliability to support CGMP biologic drug manufacturing activities. The position is responsible as an administrator for the site's building automation systems. The position is responsible for performing and documenting preventive and corrective maintenance to support the manufacturing site. The Automation Specialist is responsible for managing the life cycle of site building automation systems. The position provides leadership and guidance to the Maintenance team and is a part of ongoing site improvement projects. In support of Manufacturing operations, this position is responsible for effective notification, response and corrective action to building and system alarming. The Maintenance organization is part of an international network of manufacturing sites. All executed maintenance work and system operation is in compliance with Shire Quality and Safety policies and principles.
Position schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:30 am- 4:00 pm. Position also requires flexibility to providing emergency and business critical coverage. Weekend pay differential and On Call/Call In pay policies apply.
  • Administrator for site's building automation systems.
  • Develop and manage the Preventive Maintenance Program for building automation system and control components.
  • Monitor and operate clean utilities in direct support of CGMP manufacturing utilities to include WFI, RODI and HVAC.
  • Operate site support utilities to include Building Management System, steam plant, chilled and hot water systems.
  • Collaborate with Reliability Engineering to expand CMMS work plans/critical spare and SOP content in aim of high quality Maintenance work.
  • Perform, document and complete preventive and corrective maintenance for utility, building and process systems per established training on divisional maintenance procedures using the JDE CMMS system.
  • Troubleshoot plant operational, mechanical, electrical problems and provide corrective action.
  • Support project work, reliability initiatives, expansion projects and site CAPEX plan.
  • Execute daily rounds for critical and support utilities and respond to conditions out of normal operating limits.
  • Escort and manage service contractors for maintenance and repairs of equipment, systems, building and grounds.
  • Interface with transitioning shift for updates and receive WO assignments from the Facilities Supervisor.
  • Utilize spare parts inventory system to pick and document appropriate spare parts associated with equipment systems.
  • Communicate status of work performed and plant issues to operational customer and maintenance management.
Key Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
Technical Knowledge Required
  • Automation - Advanced knowledge and interface with building automation systems, programing code, network and hardware components.
  • Mechanical - Knowledge of machines, tools, and critical systems (e.g.; building automation systems, steam plant, HVAC/HEPA filter applications, and electrical power systems) including their operation, repair and maintenance requirements.
  • Computers - Knowledge of software including relevant applications such as Microsoft office. Experiences with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (JD Edwards or equivalent) preferred.
  • Safety - Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures to ensure safe operation of mechanical systems and tools, particular knowledge of GMP policies and procedure preferred.

  • Trouble-Shooting and Repairing - Determine root causes of operating errors and repair automation, facilities equipment or systems. Includes determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Oral and Written Comprehension - Ability to understand and read and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Operation Monitoring - Watch and interpret gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure equipment is working properly. Report and correct (or identify resources needed to correct) equipment deficiencies
  • Initiative - Position requires high degree of initiative in resolving problems and developing recommendations.
  • Reliability - Demonstrated reliability and an exemplary work record also required -including the willingness and ability to work extended hours, occasional holidays to support maintenance shut-downs, critical repairs and project implementation.
Must be able to be "on call" as required and carry a cell phone to respond to facility emergencies.

Internal and External Contacts
  • Coordination with vendors for the planning and scheduling of automation maintenance.
  • Internal planning and scheduling with QC and Manufacturing groups for service on automation systems.
Other Job Requirements
  • Manufacturing environment with potential chemical, electrical and physical hazards.
  • Willingness to wear required PPE for which EHS training will be provided.
  • Must be able to walk at length around a multi-building facility and to stand for long periods of time while performing physical duties.
  • May be required to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to work safely with materials, including chemicals, and mechanical equipment
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Minimum education required is High School Diploma
  • 7-9+ years of experience working with automation and mechanical systems in a regulated environment. Candidate's with experience in a in a CGMP environment is preferred.
    Licensure(s): The following license (or actively in process) is preferred.

  • Massachusetts State Refrigeration License
  • Massachusetts State 2nd Class Fireman License
  • Massachusetts State Waste Water Treatment License
