: MetLife Corporate Communications is seeking an experienced communications professional to be an AVP of external communications for its Investments business, which is based in Whippany, N.J. This person should have a track record of success in securing favorable media coverage for clients, and experience in counseling senior executives of large companies. MetLife Investments employs about 850 associates at its New Jersey headquarters, and it has associates in regional offices in the U.S., Europe and Latin America.  This position is a high profile opportunity to support the MetLife Investment Management (MIM) platform, to distinguish this franchise in the marketplace and to help build specific preference for it through media relations strategy and execution. The position will also play a key role in the editing of client white papers, with an eye towards sharping their focus for external audiences, in particular members of the news media.

 

Working under the direction of the VP of finance and investment communications, the the AVP – Investments Communications is an experienced communications professional who serves as a business partner and provides strategic communications support to MetLife’s Investments organization, including the CIO, and his senior leadership team.

 

Key responsibilities include playing a significant role in developing and executing communications strategies that influence a wide range of external audiences. This individual must be able to play a leading role in developing communication plans and executing them against Investments’ strategic objectives.  He/she will engage Investments leaders in an active and collaborative communication planning and implementation process.

 

This individual must have significant experience in managing external communications that target a wide range of stakeholder groups including the media, and other influencers. The position will require that significant time be spent at Investments’ headquarters in Whippany, N.J., as well as at MetLife’s headquarters in midtown Manhattan.

 

  • Support the Chief Investment Officer and his team with professional external communications that will help them achieve their business objectives
  • Provide counsel to senior leaders on communications strategies and secure buy-in on approaches
  • Secure favorable media coverage of Investments’ business initiatives, successes, and people.
  • Simplify complex ideas and strategies from the organization to external audiences, understanding how to make them relevant
  • Work effectively with others at all levels within the Investments organization
  • Effectively manage and deliver communication through a variety of channels using current and emerging communications technology
  • Work regularly with the CIO’s chief of staff and head of marketing to determine communications priorities for Investments and execute plans to address those priorities.

 

  • High proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 8-10 years of experience in corporate communications. Experience in investments/asset management or financial communications at an insurance company or similar financial institution a plus.
  • Ability to explain complex financial concepts and make them relevant to multiple audiences.
  • Media Relations experience.
  • Experience working with senior business leaders.
  • Ability to work as a team player who willingly shares knowledge and information with others.
  • Sound judgment as a communications professional.
