Briquetter Utility Operator

Assist in the operation and maintenance of a high volume blending and briquetting cell.
  • Ability to work safe and safely with others while respecting the established safety rules
  • Load and unload materials and product for the furnaces by use of conveyor system and hoppers
  • Inspect the condition of the product through daily scale standardizations of hoppers to ensure quality and document results accurately
  • Perform operations as directed from verbal and/or written documents such as: shift logs, procedures, work instructions, checklists and/or manuals
  • Maintain current status on relevant training, documents and competency training forms
  • Strong learning aptitude required because blend system and computer knowledge base must be learned on the job
  • Operate equipment such as tow motors, overhead cranes and hoists
  • Function as a viable member of the briquetter team
  • Operate the hydraulic presses as directed by management
  • Interpret and control the hydraulic press conditions as they relate to final product
  • Conduct daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly preventive and general maintenance on hydraulic press system, weigh hopper, scales, conveyors and mixers
  • Maintain operating records and logs
  • Use continuous improvement and kaizen measures to improve production methods, equipment performance and quality of product
  • Suggest and assist in implementing changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew
  • Ability to repair pilot valves, check valves and cooling systems required
  • Set up hydraulic press hardware including rams, tips and dies
  • Ability to rebuild hydraulic pumps and motors to tolerance levels of .5 to 1.0% accuracy required
  • Ability to operate blending, briquetting and scale equipment
  • Troubleshoot equipment and system abnormalities
  • Possess or have the ability to learn one or more of the following skills at the apprentice level: welding, machining, mechanical/millwright, MIG and TIG weld, Pneumatic and Hydraulic knowledge, machining skills or basic electrical circuit knowledge
  • Possess computer knowledge, preferably Microsoft Excel
  • Use various hand and power tools (grinders, drills, saws) as directed
  • Take ownership of equipment and areas including all housekeeping activities. Drive 6S standards
  • Must be flexible with work schedule and be available for overtime and weekends
  • Work on tasks outside of the job description as directed by Management and/or Lead Operators for training, emergency relief purposes, production needs or continuous improvements

Basic Qualifications

Must be able to perform each individual job duty satisfactorily
  • Associates degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, drawings and blueprints
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations
  • Physical Demands: The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and climb or balance. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision**
  • Work Environment: The employee is regularly exposed to high, precarious places and must be able to work in small or confined spaces. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in wet and/or humid conditions with fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud
