Central Sterile Processing is responsible for cleaning, decontamination, assembly, packaging and sterilization of all surgical instrumentation and reusable supply items. Supervises the processing, storage and distribution of processed sterile supplies and equipment. Oversees department operation, conducts in-service education programs for staff members as necessary and on a routine basis.
*Licensure/Certification/Registration: Certified Central Processing Technician. Technician certification must be from either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM).
*Experience: Three (3) years hospital experience in sterile processing with a minimum of one (1) year supervisory or lead experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Note: Incumbent may continue in this classification for up to 90 Days and must pass the certification from CBSPD or IAHCSMM examination within that timeframe.
*Special qualifications: Knowledge of maintenance and sterilization of medical supplies and equipment. Knowledge of applicable sanitation and hygiene standards. Knowledge of proper safety practices of steam and gas plasma sterilization. Knowledge of simple record keeping principles and practices. Effective customer service skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other medical staff, peers and subordinates. Effective verbal and written communication. Good computer skills. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Skills in supervisory methods.
