Under direct supervision (or general supervision limited in scope) regularly and customarily performs complicated work on radio communication equipment and other electronic devices. This includes such work as the following illustrative duties, together with other related and incidental work:
1. Installs and places in proper operating condition, tests, adjusts, maintains and repairs all radio communication equipment.
2. Installs and places in proper operating condition, tests, adjusts, maintains and repairs supervisory, power line carrier, microwave and electronic control equipment.
3. Must assist supervisors and engineers in making studies and calculations relative to the operation of communication equipment and other electronic devices.
4. Prepares diagrams relative to electronic circuits and other special studies and tests as required.
5. Performs necessary clerical work incidental to the job.
6. Directs the work of and instructs others who, upon occasion, may be assigned to assist him.
7. Operates automotive equipment.
In addition to the above and other related work of similar grade, a Communication Technician Second Class will be assigned to any other work of equal or lesser skill within the capabilities of the individual, to meet emergencies or other operating needs.
Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field OR the equivalent combination of formal education, training and experience.
Experience demonstrating skill installing, testing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and/or repairing switched Ethernet based systems and/or communication systems.
Experience demonstrating skill performing complex testing, analysis and troubleshooting of equipment using analog and digital test equipment.
Experience demonstrating skill interpreting complex construction and manufacturers' drawings and manuals (e.g., electrical/electronic wiring and schematic diagrams).
Experience demonstrating skill performing basic math (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Experience demonstrating skill operating automotive equipment such as automobiles, vans, or light trucks.
Experience demonstrating skill performing administrative/paperwork tasks and documenting details of field conditions, maintenance, and repairs of equipment.
Experience demonstrating skill using technical application software (e.g. to install, program, maintain, and/or troubleshoot equipment).
Experience demonstrating skill working with other departments.
Experience demonstrating skill directing or instructing others on work practices.
Ability and willingness to travel to various company and off-site locations.
Ability and willingness to perform a second role in accordance with PHI's Emergency Preparedness Guidelines for all employees
Ability and willingness to work non-standard and extended hours, rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, holidays and during system emergencies as required.
Ability and willingness to wear and use safety equipment as required by Federal, State, Local and Company regulations.
Ability and willingness to perform both indoor and outdoor tasks for extended periods of time (e.g., lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders and scaffolding, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, pulling/pushing, standing, walking, and squatting).
Ability and willingness to perform rescue and first aid activities including resuscitation.
Ability and willingness to work in a variety of work environments, all weather conditions, at extreme heights, in dark or limited light areas, and in noisy and dirty environments with proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Ability and willingness to work around energized electrical substation equipment.
Ability and willingness to participate in computer based refresher/compliance training.
Ability and willingness to distinguish between color-coded wires and components.
Ability and willingness to drive and work out of the Company Communications vehicle.
Must live within the service territory within 6 months of entry into the position.
Must pass Qualification Test.
Must possess a valid Driver's License.
Must successfully pass a Criminal History Background Check which consists of a 7-year criminal records check for felony convictions.
Must successfully pass a Medical Screening to include a Drug Test.
This position is a NERC Regulated position. As such, a background check will be conducted on incumbent every seven years. Additionally, the incumbent will be required to complete annual NERC compliance training.
