The Compound Development Team Leader (CDTL) - Oncology will provide leadership to a cross-functional team with responsibility for the compound strategy for one of the most innovative and transformational marketed drugs in the Oncology portfolio. In this role, you will champion the product/brand at all levels across the JNJ enterprise and will guide the communications approach on all CDT matters.

  • Actively guide Compound Strategy decision-making by ensuring relevant research, analysis, and expertise is available.
  • Lead CDT in partnership with line functions to optimize value of the compound throughout its lifecycle.
  • Identify continuous improvements to speed and efficiency without sacrificing quality.
  • Build team effectiveness, ensuring cross functional partnerships and resources are leveraged effectively, and with accountability, to achieve development goals.
  • Drive collaboration and transparency across all functions on the CDT and challenge team members to be broad and inclusive in their strategy planning.  
  • Identify potential issues and guide contingency planning with a solutions focused mindset.
  • Resolve conflicts and influence decision making at the CDT, Oncology Senior Leadership Team (Oncology SLT), Development Committee (DC), Investment Committee (IC), Group Operating Committee (GOC) and joint steering committees for partnered compounds.
  • Ensure successful implementation of clinical supplies strategy and is accountable for overall budget and project plan deliverables.
  • Act as co-chair of global project teams with Alliance partners and serves as a key collaborator for partnered compounds, leveraging lessons learned at critical nodes in the development path.
  • Represent the compound/brand (along with commercial lead) at the Oncology SLT.



  • An MD or M.D./Ph.D. with 6 or more years of related experience; PhD with 8 or more years; OR a Master’s with 10 or more years of experience
  • Experience leading clinical development programs within Oncology or Immunology related Therapeutic areas as a part of a research-driven pharmaceutical company
  • Expert knowledge of the drug development process and familiarity with pharmaceutical portfolio risk management and the requirements for successful commercialization of a new product
  • Master communicator, able to effectively interact at all levels of the organization.
  • Expert critical interpretation of scientific and commercial data and analytical skill in translating interdisciplinary project information into action plans.
  • Proven project planning and tracking skills; Demonstrated ability for strategic thinking and contingency planning
  • Ability to communicate seamlessly between scientific and business partners alike, to negotiate timelines, resources and effective international collaborations 
  • High degree of organizational awareness and understanding of change management
  • Ability to travel as needed approx. 25 % annually (international, as well as domestic)
  • Business orientation, with prior resource and budget management.
  • Track record of leading development projects through successful clinical development, registration and launch within the therapeutic area.
