JOB SUMMARY: Primary responsibilities include managing the preparation of annual audited GAAP and STAT financial statements of Nationwide Enterprise and/or statements of various subsidiaries. The role includes reviewing disclosures, researching complex accounting issues and benchmarking against peers and industry leaders. Other responsibilities include managing the preparation of quarterly reviewed GAAP financial statements, the quarterly close process and the preparation of other supporting financial reporting materials. Responsible for managing the relationships with internal and external business partners, including those responsible for internal controls, audit and review procedures and data governance. Works closely with AVP, Enterprise Reporting Controller, as well as business unit controllers and other key executives throughout the organization.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Enterprise Reporting Director/AVP. No direct reports but may serve as a lead to junior level associates.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
+ Leads the planning, preparation and review of the quarterly GAAP financial statements and the annual Enterprise and/or various subsidiaries GAAP and STAT financial statements. Supports a team leading 24 annual audited financial statements and 6 quarterly financial statements. These external financial statements are provided to various state Departments of Insurance, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve, the US Department of Labor, Fortune Magazine, various ratings agencies (S&P, Moodys, Fitch, etc.), debt-holders, the Nationwide Audit Committee and the general public.
+ Assists in the planning, preparation and review of GAAP and STAT financial statements owned by other members of the department as needed
+ Manages the analysis of quarterly financial results for the enterprise and segments and provide supporting materials as required to assist in analytical review meetings with CAO, business unit controllers and other executive level members of management
+ Manages the preparation and analysis of the GAAP and STAT financial consolidations, encompassing over 500 legal entities, which serve as the base for the audited financial statements
+ Manages the progression of Nationwide's financial close, including overseeing and coordinating the completion of over 4,000 close milestones across more than 400 finance associates
+ Provides analysis and reporting of financial data used for business transactions that impact risk and capital management, such as the issuance of debt and surplus notes, acquisition of companies, as well as financial data submissions used by the SEC and rating agencies
+ Functions as the subject matter expert on changes to GAAP and/or STAT regulatory requirements that ultimately impact the financial statements, reports and other financial data. Provides consultation to management on the internal impact.
+ Oversees the optimization of financial reporting processes to produce high-quality deliverables in an efficient and effective manner, while meeting all established deadlines. Responsible for identifying opportunities across the organization to stream-line financial reporting processes and add-value by decreasing external audit overruns. Direct the design, implementation and operation of internal controls over financial reporting processes.
+ Act as primary contact for internal and external auditors during the audit of financial statements, financial reporting controls and processes
+ Advise management on the industry best practices for financial reporting, including benchmarking financial statement disclosures against peer companies
+ Acts as primary liaison for the FRC_PMO department, including coordinating all required control testing procedures from a reporting and consolidation perspective
+ Leads data quality initiatives to help ensure the accuracy of internally and externally reported financial information
+ Leads initiatives to strengthen Controllership's utilization of software tools
+ Provides financial data to support the quarterly financial highlights and review the quarterly press release, which are published on Nationwide's external website. Provide and review financial data within the summary annual report provided to policyholders and published on the Nationwide external website.
+ Maintains current knowledge of FASB, SEC, SAP and other authoritative pronouncements, advise senior management on their impact and oversee the financial reporting and disclosure impact upon adoption. Provide technical accounting expertise to functional finance leaders.
+ Supports department development initiatives, including GALLUP action planning, goals and objectives, CPE compliance, staff training opportunities and volunteerism
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Undergraduate degree in accounting and/or finance required.
Designations: CPA designation preferred.
Experience: Five to seven years experience in public accounting and/or industry experience with concentration in reporting, accounting and auditing. Insurance experience preferred.
Knowledge: GAAP and/or STAT accounting bases. Insurance regulatory requirements. Complex financial statement preparation including consolidation of companies/subsidiaries. Financial/statistical analysis. Principles of taxation and the related impact on financial statement preparation. Accounting and/or business computer systems. Project management concepts and techniques. Firm grasp of technical accounting guidance and issues.
Skills/ Competencies: Must have the ability to analyze financial results and trends and interpret complex financial statements. Must have well-developed oral and written communication skills, with an emphasis on organizational sensitivity for contact with all levels of associates including business unit leadership, external parties such as regulators and public accountants, industry professionals and other internal clients. Ability to interpret changes in financial reporting and legal/regulatory requirements relative to the impact on financial reporting and to the formulation of company or business area policies and procedures. Must possess decision-making skills for problem identification and solution recommendation. Must have management skills to lead a project team and drive a project to successful completion. Must have the ability to develop and maintain efficient financial information networks and systems.
