Plans, coordinates and evaluates the Childbirth Education program. Supervises childbirth educators and oversees the childbirth classes. Assesses competency of childbirth educators. Provides educator orientation and development. Conducts classes on the OUMC campus as well as throughout the community. Collaborates with community organizations to assist in meeting the educational needs of the public. Reviews current curriculum and develops new curriculum as necessary. Compiles and analyzes statistics on the education program. Schedules classes for Childbirth Education, Breastfeeding Basics, Sibling and Infant Safety/CPR. Participates on various committees to enhance patient/community education.
Coordinates the development and implementation of a comprehensive breastfeeding program for both inpatients and outpatients. Develops educational resources and oversees the educational program. Responsible for community education to promote breastfeeding. Collaborates with the nursing staff and physicians to develop an in-house breastfeeding protocol. Provides consultation for complicated situations, such as multiple births, premature infants or for problem situations. Coordinates the lactation office to ensure continuity of care for mothers and babies. Evaluates performance of the staff and ensures that quality service is provided. Arranges appropriate in-services and continuing education programs to meet the needs of the staff. Researches current trends and new developments in breastfeeding.
*Licensure: Must have certification from the International Board as Certified Lactation
Consultant (IBCLC) and be registered through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. If applying as a Registered Nurse, must be in possession of an interim work permit, temporary license or permanent license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse prior to entrance on duty (permanent license must be obtained within 3 months of appointment). Registered Nurses in this position must maintain licensure.
