Job Description

As a publicly-held company, Brighthouse management must document and research accounting judgments for both generally accepting accounting principles (GAAP) in the US and statutory accounting principles (SAP).  This position will be responsible for initial research and documentation with respect to accounting consultations involving GAAP and SAP accounting for non-insurance matters such as taxes, employee benefits and other compensation, leases, fixed assets, general expenses, etc.  This position will also monitor both a quarterly list of significant issues and accounting errors impacting the consolidated financial statements. 


This position will support the enterprise in activities related to documenting its accounting positions involving insurance products.  Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Consultations and detail memos regarding various topics including taxes, employee benefits and other compensation, leases, fixed assets, general expenses, etc.
  • Review of new agreements entered into by the Company other than for insurance products sold.
  • Update accounting policies and procedures for topics of responsibility. 
  • Implementation of FASB’s new guidance for leases and other topics.
  • Monitor other potential changes to GAAP and SAP for areas of responsibility.
  • Coordinate the quarterly list of significant issues.
  • Coordinate the quarterly list of errors and related SAB 99/108 memo.
  • Coordination of the drafting of related materials for the Audit Committee
  • Assistance with accounting for investments as needed.



Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 8-12 years with progressive experience in technical accounting research and documentation
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP including expertise in of tax accounting, employee benefit plans, and stock compensation.
  • Familiarity with SAP.
  • Working knowledge of SEC reporting.
  • Ability to deal effectively with individuals of all levels of the corporate structure.
  • Demonstrated experience leading critical initiatives, including project development, identifying needed resources and key milestones, and effectively monitoring progress to conclusion
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results by working independently.
  • Very strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient use of all Microsoft Office programs, as well as Outlook

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate or undergraduate degree/major in accounting or related financial field
  • CPA or equivalent with 6+ years’ experience in public accounting and 2+ years in private industry preferred.


    Required Education

    Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or other related.
