MetLife is a leader in the financial services industry.  This is an exciting opportunity to provide tax legal support to MetLife’s tax department, with a focus on investments work.  The focus would be on tax legal analysis and support on a variety of investments: real estate debt and equity investments, private placements, agricultural investments, structured debt and equity investments, portfolio management, derivatives and investment management activities, workouts and insurance investment law compliance.  International investment tax experience is a plus.

This Counsel role is within the Financial Management Group and works with other financial teams besides Investments, including Treasury and Mergers & Acquisitions and enjoys a broad and sophisticated practice within a collegial team.  The role provides an exciting growth opportunity with tremendous client contact across multiple lines of business. 


This role would provide legal advice to business clients on the applications of federal or local statutes and regulations, domestic and abroad, based on legal research; draft and negotiate documents, including fund agreements and take a lead role in closing co-investments and deals; manage and direct the daily activities required to respond to legal queries, issues and concerns from members of the tax group and from the investment business units.





  1. Handles legal matters for assigned business clients or the tax department and can resolve difficult problems using sound legal judgment.
  2. Analyzes legal issues, drafts and executes legal documents, and negotiates matters.
  3. Builds client relations with diplomacy and by providing insightful, timely, and pragmatic counsel.
  4. Conducts legal research and gathers matter-related information from various sources.  Incorporates developed business knowledge when analyzing issues and applying legal expertise.
  5. May work with and/or guide outside counsel, as appropriate, on various matters.




  1. Juris Doctorate (or equivalent).
  2. Admitted to practice before at least one state bar.
  3. LLM in Taxation preferred.
  4. 3 to 5 years of experience in advisory firm or large financial institution or similar.
  5. Familiar with tax issues of industries such as Real Estate, Lending, Financial Institution, Private Equity, and Hedge Funds.
  6. Significant work with real estate, investment funds and partnerships. 
  7. Familiarity with income tax return process and tax accounting.
