Data Scientist

Microsoft is seeking exceptional data scientists to join the Office of the CVP, Chief Economist, (Microsoft Economics). We are a research group which produces peer reviewed research and implementing those insights with product group partners and productizing the research directly. Candidates should have strong technical data skills and a desire to use those skills on applied economic problems.

The data scientist will work closely with economists and other data scientists in the group. Example topics include cloud pricing (spot, reserve, workloads, datacenter), sales promotion effectiveness, search auctions, machine learning predictions and forecasting, and market design. The work involves theoretical models but focuses on applied statistics like causal inference and a wide variety of both supervised and unsupervised machine learning. Hires with experience in ML will be expected to have an interest in learning econometrics and causal inference techniques. Some data engineering experience like data pipeline construction is also highly desired.

The Office of the CVP, Chief Economist is part of the Artificial Intelligence and Research (AI+R) Organization. Basic Qualifications:
- BS in one or more of: Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or Economics (with econometrics focus)

Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years professional experience in applications of advanced statistical and analytical techniques
- Passion for solving practical problems and innovative thinking
- Proficiency in statistical packages and standard libraries in R (glmnet, ggplot, etc.), Python (numpy, pandas, etc.) or MATLAB
- Proficiency with Relational Databases and SQL
- Proficiency with distributed Big Data Analytics using one of: Apache Spark, Hadoop, Azure Data Lake or COSMOS
- Solid understanding of statistical inference techniques and ability to work with Machine Learning Models
- Experience in machine learning using frameworks such as sci-kit learn, CNTK, Tensor Flow or Theano
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills
- High level of entrepreneurial drive
- Passion for solving practical problems and innovative thinking

Preference given to candidates with:
- MS/Ph.D. in a Quantitative field (or Economics)
- Experience in Software development with object oriented languages such as C#, C++ or Java
- Peer-reviewed publications in applied economics, machine learning or data mining
- Portfolio of projects using predictive analytics to solve problems
- Demonstrated expertise in research designs for causal inference, applied microeconometrics and/or Time-Series modeling
- Data engineering experience as well
