The Coding Director is responsible for assisting in the development and evolution of the overall strategy for the Company's coding operations in the Health Information Management Service Center (HSC). The Coding Director is responsible for overall coding compliance and daily coding operations for the HSC including management of coding specific unbilled functions. The Coding Director interprets policies and procedures, recommends changes as appropriate, and provides relevant feedback. The Coding Director assists the HSC COO with the oversight and implementation of HSC planning, service level agreements, budgets, workflow processes and internal controls. This person serves as a key promoter of the HSC and is responsible for setting the tone of the center as a service organization, continuously seeking to understand, meet and exceed customer expectations and needs.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for HSC coding operations, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, completeness, consistency, compliance and standards fulfillment as defined in HSC Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • Contributes to the development of strategic direction of HIM at HCA
  • Coaches and provides overall guidance to the HSC coding team to resolve internal and external issues; help resolve dysfunctional behavior within functional area(s); discipline and counsel staff as necessary
  • Monitors HIM coding performance according to productivity and quality standards as defined in job descriptions and SLAs
  • Manages and motivates HSC coding staff
  • Assists in the development and management of strategy, specific goals, objectives, budgets and performance standards for the HSC
  • Proactively manages, including corresponding communications and escalation paths, significant issues in HIM coding processes (e.g., coding backlogs, HIM coding delays, abstracting backlogs, and data discrepancies), status of projects, barriers and successes

  • Coding Technical Skills- regulatory coding (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, ICD-9-CM, CPT-4, HCPCS, APCs and MS-DRGs) knowledge
  • Policies & Procedures - articulates knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems
  • Financial Management - applies tools and processes to successfully manage to budget
  • Project Management - assesses work activities and allocates resources appropriately
Education
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in HIM
Experience
  • Minimum 6 years acute care HIM recent inpatient and outpatient coding experience strongly preferred
  • Minimum 5 years healthcare management/leadership required
  • Experience managing a large coding pool and/or coding reviewer pool strongly preferred
  • Consulting or proven work experience in areas of process transformation, process reengineering, shared services, change management and project management a plus
Certificates/License - RHIA and CCS required.
