Reporting to the Head of Marketing Excellence and 1GMS Operations, the Director Marketing Excellence, Consumer Sector is a critical role within the organization, tasked with the responsibility of sourcing and implementing the next generation of Marketing Excellence Training Programs that will ensure J&J’s marketing capabilities stay at the cutting edge of the industry.  As J&J embarks on a journey of pushing into a new way of marketing in today’s increasingly connected, real-time world, the incumbent will be part of the team ensuring that our marketers around the world have the knowledge, tools, and capabilities to live into this new way of marketing.

He or She will be a key interface with HR and talent teams in embedding our career experience framework and training  to define core skill areas for development.

The Director of MX will also lead assessing our current skills through industry leading assessment tools and developing and updating recommendations It also involves developing training courses and programming against current and emerging skill areas and gaining organizational alignment to the new programs. 

This person will also own the partnership with one or more regions around the world and/or segments in the development of their training and capability agenda; and building a collaborative relationship with those regions/segments. This will be executed through the MX champions team that acts as marketing excellence ambassadors from each key market or market cluster for regional execution of training programs as they launch MX programs and modules worldwide

This role will be a high visibility role to senior marketing leaders including the CMO, GFLT, GMS leadership team, regional leadership and the broad global marketing community. This serves as a great broadening assignment for 2 years for marketers with strong potential who can benefit from senior leadership visibility, global market and marketer experience as well a exposure to cutting edge marketing thinking and capabilities. 


  • A bachelor’s degree required, MBA a plus.
  • 8+ years of experience working in world-class brand-building organizations in a combination of line marketing, and global marketing is required.
  • Consumer marketing experience is required.
  • Must be a lifelong learner with curiosity and passion for creating and innovating operating models and marketing capability.
  • Agile and conceptual thinker who can demonstrate mastery of marketing concepts and principles is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to align function strategy and priorities with overall organizational strategy and direction is required.
  • Ability to influence and manage stakeholders to the senior most levels of a large, matrix organization is required.
  • Outstanding and clear communication skills; an outstanding presenter, and able to communicate complex ideas simply in both verbal and written communications is required.
  • Proven track-record leading and influencing large teams through a transformation and elevating capabilities.
  • Strong track record of leadership in high performance consumer packaged goods environment preferred.
  • Agile and able to change behavior across range of situations, strong change management capabilities is required.
  • Strategic business partnership: cross-functional leadership, business acumen and understanding of organizational dynamics, influencing skills, objectivity.            
  • Strong and demonstrated passion for building capabilities and developing future marketing talent required.
  • Coaching/mentoring skills to build organizational strength; Experience in building teams; Development and application of best practices and global standards; Effective conflict management; Innovative thinking required.
  • Approximately 20% intra-company travel between New Jersey and New York sites required.
  • Approximately 15% travel required globally and domestically required.
