The Director, Oral Drug Delivery Technology will be a highly experienced technical expert in the field of drug delivery with a strong material science background and will be responsible for leading a team of scientists that are charged with advancing the development of new technology platforms.  This individual will develop and expand material science knowledge in an area that is characterized by lack of scientific precedent. The Director, Oral Drug Delivery Technology will be the bridge between various scientific disciplines namely engineering, pharmaceutics and analytical science to maximize the potential for project success.  This individual will deliver on elements of strategic business plans by translating scientific innovation and technically sound strategies into business applications.  The Director, Oral Drug Delivery Technology will be the primary back-up and succession position for the Head of OTC Technology. 

This individual will drive strategic idea generation, develop breakthrough technical concepts and develop proprietary technologies. In addition the Director, Oral Drug Delivery Technology will be responsible for the following specific areas:

• Leading the characterization and selection of raw materials, based on key functional attributes in formulations for novel oral pharmaceutical dosage form technologies.   
• Leading research activities to guide the formulation team toward a fundamental understanding of physical and chemical mechanisms involved in dosage form formation and stability, for technology new to the pharmaceutical industry.  
• Using mechanistic understanding as a basis for design of experiments to establish ranges for critical material attributes.  
• Hands-on understanding of analytical technologies used in material characterization and measuring physical chemical properties of a wide range of pharmaceutical excipients. Setting specifications for raw materials and finished products based on performance in new technology.
• Creating material based principles of formulating in a new technology space enabling robust, reliable, and repeatable processes.
• Collaborating with a broad range of external partners to identify unique solutions to challenging technical problems. 
• Driving the IP portfolio through strong technical insights and inter-disciplinary technical creativity related to applications of technologies, or materials and formulations that can lead to meaningful consumer benefits.  
• cGMP compliant technical documentation of all work directly under the incumbent’s supervision assuring the quality of team studies and documentation, including lab notebooks, clinical dossiers and development reports (new formulations and processes).
• Closely work with External Innovation, representing OTC R&D as well as interface with strategic partners on the assessment, development and customization of innovative and proprietary materials.



Qualifications
  • Must be a proven people leader with clear growth potential to a Senior Director role, and have excellent communication and collaboration skills towards stakeholders.
  • Minimum of a PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering Science, Physical Chemistry, Physical Pharmacy/Pharmaceutics, Polymer Science or a closely related field, with at least 15 years of professional experience.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry and exposure to pharmaceutical cGMPs and quality standards is strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading the characterization and selection of raw materials, based on key functional attributes in formulations for novel oral pharmaceutical dosage form technologies is required.
  • Experience leading research activities to guide the formulation team toward a fundamental understanding of physical and chemical mechanisms involved in dosage form formation and stability, for technology new to the pharmaceutical industry is required.
  • Experience using mechanistic understanding as a basis for design of experiments to establish ranges for critical material attributes is required.
  • Hands-on understanding of analytical technologies used in material characterization and measuring physical chemical properties of a wide range of pharmaceutical excipients is required.
  • Setting specifications for raw materials and finished products based on performance in new technology is required.
  • Demonstrated track record in leading scientific teams in highly complex projects is required.
  • Innovative and insightful experience in managing major research efforts or platforms for superior delivery is highly desirable
  • Strong record of issued patents, patent applications and published material in a relevant field is required.
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed environment is required.
  • Travel may be up to 10%, both domestic and international.
  • Ability to work in Skillman, NJ is required.
