The Systems Team withinVerizon Telematicsis responsible for designing and operating our infrastructure and Data Center strategy to provide a highly available, scalable hosting infrastructure with high performance. We are looking for an experienced technical leader and strategist to take our SAAS hosting platform and data center operations to the next level and help us grow the business by defining and delivering industry leading next generation hosting infrastructure operations architected for the cloud. The ideal person would be technically deep, aspire to build awesome technology, and capable of hiring and developing the best engineering talent. As Senior Manager of Systems Technology, you will lead a world class system administration team responsible for the design and operations behind how our software was built and how to build new technology best suited for the cloud. You will draw from your deep and broad technical expertise to hire and mentor engineers, complete hands-on technical work and provide leadership on complex technical issues. Your team is distributed in Austin, Texas and New Zealand. A successful Senior Manager joining the team will do much more than manage infrastructure, tools, and people. They will be leading a team that builds automation and services that make operating a massive large scale distributed system simple and easy. In addition to this, you will be the focal point for owning end-to-end customer experience and will be channeling the requirements to improve the service performance, scalability and reliability. You will also be in charge of forecasting and managing the end-to-end capacity as well as operating costs of our large-scale services helping us turn scale into an advantage for our business and an asset to our customers.

Building, motivating and mentoring a world-class systems & software engineering team is the most important part of this role. You should have a proven track record in recruiting and retaining top talent and excel in day-to-day people and performance management tasks. Have a strong understanding of Systems Engineering, Linux & Networking Technologies, data center operations and systems automation. You will also have a strong level of knowledge in Linux and Windows Server. You will enjoy keeping your technical skills reasonably current, to the point that you can still contribute to architecture discussions. You regularly take part in deep-dive troubleshooting exercises and drive technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues. Have strong project & product management experience. You will develop our data center hosting infrastructure strategy. The successful candidate will create product roadmaps for the team. This will include helping innovate and invent new value-add services layered on top of our existing services. You will need excellent technical project management skills to deliver product roadmap items as well as other cross-team projects.

Experience with Agile methodologies is an advantage. Know how to run a tight, lean, efficient operation. The right candidate will want to measure everything and be very data driven. This individual will excel at using metrics, monitoring and alarming to measure and improve the operational processes and performance of their team.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field
  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience, and at least 2 years of people management experience
  • Minimum of five years experience operating mission critical online services
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated technical leadership
  • 5+ years experience operating software services in a Linux environment
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Deep understanding of SaaS and cloud technologies and outsourcing


  • Strong business and technical vision
  • Have experience in an internet operational environment, including multiple data centers and thousands of servers
  • Have been successful working across organizational boundaries, bringing together people with diverse perspectives and experience to find solutions
  • Experience with *NIX system administration, C#, Linux/Unix, Perl and Python
  • Exceptional customer relationship skills and experience of managing vendors.
  • Experience at defining, deploying and coaching strategic Supply Chain vision to deliver high-availability and efficient solutions at an enterprise scale.
  • Ideally have strong analytical, qualitative and quantitative skills. Demonstrated process re-engineering, process improvement influencing teams to become customer focused.
