Job Description

Snapshot: Discover is looking for an entrepreneurial and seasoned marketing executive to work with senior management to build and lead the Discover Student Loans marketing strategy and campaign execution. This position has a full range of responsibilities for marketing strategy and communication through:
  • Campaign Strategy
  • Channel Strategy
  • Creative Strategy
  • Content development and distribution

Mission and expected outcomes for this role:

Provide leadership to ensure continued growth of Student Loans within the Discover family of products while building relationships to increase product penetration among card members and ensuring profitable growth in the broad market. This leader is a key member of the leadership team and reports directly to the VP, Marketing and Product Management for Discover Student Loans.
  • Provide leadership to drive profitable growth of the business with broad responsibilities spanning product positioning, creative development, and communication strategy and campaign management.
  • Responsibility for acquisition of new accounts and for retention of existing customers.
  • Create and maintain the Discover Student Loans brand.
  • Strategic planning to execution, including LEAN Six Sigma and / or demonstrated process improvement expertise.
  • Exhibit a strong executive presence in a low-ego, approachable and collaborative style.
  • Promote a risk-aware culture and ensure efficient and effective risk and compliance management practices by adhering to required standards and processes.

Areas of Ownership:
  • Campaign Strategy - Develop and execute marketing campaigns for student loan acquisition. Define targeting and campaign volumes by working closely with the analytics team to meet the originations goals for the business. Build relationships with campaign management teams and external vendors to successfully execute campaigns. The Director will lead all marketing tactics, working closely with partners in analytics to provide recommendations for budget decisions and proactively identify new opportunities, tactics, and/or modifications to existing campaign strategies.
  • Channel Strategy - Grow a multi-channel strategy the leverages digital and offline channels to their best efficiency. Strategically and efficiently combine direct mail, digital marketing, and mass media efforts to drive growth for the business.
  • Creative Strategy - Leverage internal and external resources to improve response through appropriate messaging customer segments. Develop segmentation strategies, value proposition and creative packages that maximize profitable loan generation.
  • Content development and distribution - Lead the strategy and execution of content development and distribution online (display, affiliate networks, social media and search marketing).


  • Bachelor's degree required. MBA preferred.
  • 10 + years of professional experience, including 5 years of marketing experience overseeing multiple channels (consumer financial services experience is a plus).
  • Strong analytical and consumer insights experience with ability to grasp complex business issues and lead decision making in an analytical and data-intensive environment.
  • Successful people manager with proven skills in developing and leading high performing teams to deliver optimal results in a growth organization.

  • A strong entrepreneurial background with the ability to tailor and execute on own plan to reach objectives.
  • Results-oriented with a demonstrated ability to design and launch innovative marketing programs
  • Ability to lead and influence across diverse stakeholder groups, strong communication skills and a team orientation.
