Eaton has an opening for a Specialist, Electro-hydraulic Systems on the Corporate Research & Technology team in Southfield, Michigan.
 
Corporate Research & Technology (CRT) focuses on the front end of innovation by:  conducting research to advance the state of the art, emphasizing technologies with cross-business impact technologies, and innovating to provide Eaton’s customers with safe, efficient, and reliable power management solutions.
 
The Fluid Systems team has the principal goal of identifying, developing, and justifying commercialization of significant growth opportunities for diverse Eaton businesses in the area of electrohydraulic and hydromechanical technologies related to fluid systems and machinery, including system architecture, valves, pumps, motors, cylinders, compressors, fittings, and conveyance.  The team engages in defining, planning, leading and executing technology programs, applying mechanical engineering theory and practice to Hydraulic, Vehicle, Aerospace, and Electrical applications. The team maps technology solutions to market opportunities. 
 
The Engineering Specialist is expected to lead technology strategy and execution for specific applications. This includes acquiring resources, funding and establishing key partnerships both internally and externally to drive technological advancement. They will be responsible for meeting the schedule, scope, cost and technical targets for all research and development efforts under his/her control.
 
The Engineering Specialist should serve as a subject matter expert within the area of Fluid Systems for Eaton. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with the external technical community and academia, active participation in industry or technical groups and events, publishing papers, etc. Finally as a subject matter expert internally the Engineering Specialist will be expected to mentor junior staff and consult with internal business & engineering customers.
 
Essential Functions include:
  • Leads complex global technology realization programs/projects utilizing our internal project execution processes, including Gate Reviews, Design Reviews, and Technical Reviews.
  • Project leads are the single point of contact for the entire project. They are responsible for creating, executing and tracking all the milestones for the entire project. They also assign roles and responsibilities for the project team members.
  • Program leads are responsible for setting the strategy for an entire program that can encompass multiple projects. They are responsible to assign project leads and technical leads for all program activities and are the single point of contact to upper management for all program activities.
  • Serves as (or support) Program Managers in the development of detailed project plans and value proposition.
  • Lead globally diverse cross-functional project teams effectively and manage selected projects under the guidelines of our internal stage-gate process.
  • Leads the development of strategies for technology roadmaps for specific applications that are linked to and supportive of the overall CRT and business strategies. 
  • Participates and presents in ideation events (Innovation Summits, Design Bursts, etc.).
  • Serves as Principal Investigator in government proposal preparation and/or project execution.
  • Initiates and develops solid relationships with both engineering and business leaders within Eaton to drive strong business cases for new commercial applications and acquire needed resources and funding.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on Electro-hydraulics or fluid systems from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-degree experience with industry exposure in fluid systems research or engineering, specifically system level modeling to conduct trade studies and down-select architectures for electro-hydraulic and/or hydro-mechanical systems, components, and controls
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with prototype fluid system design, build, test , data capture, and analysis
 
Position Criteria:
  • Excellent understanding of computational techniques and tools for analysis of complex electro-mechanical systems, good hands-on knowledge of multiphysics modeling & simulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading technology development activities.  Experience interfacing with global teams and working in a matrix organization.
  • Key contact and recognition at Director level
  • Understands risks and is able to set key milestones for technology development
  • Can assess trade-offs between business needs and solutions and influence business strategy
  • Ensures and drives advancement of Technical, Commercial, and Manufacturing readiness levels
  • Experience in government proposal submission and win
  • Able to identify strong business alignment with the government funding opportunity
  • Active leadership in a technical or industry event/group (ex: serve as a co-chair for a session at a technical conference)
  • Experience taking more than one new application though new product introduction
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on Electro-hydraulics or fluid systems
  • DFSS Black Belt
