The Associate Underwriter’s primary responsibilities include the manual rating of New Business quotes with a focus of less than 99 lives. The Associate Underwriter position will have quoting authority and end to end ownership for new business quotes that are 2-99 lives.  Job responsibilities include generating rate calculations; risk assessment, reviewing and producing cost and benefit summaries, and analyzing the risk to offer comparable plan designs.  Associate Underwriter will also have decision making authority on final rates. 



  • Determine if the basic required information is provided in the request for proposal.
  • Upload documentation into electronic files.
  • Decide if risk is acceptable/suitable for MetLife.
  • Gather plan design and group information; analyze and offer comparable plan design.
  • Evaluate and analyze data to input plan design information and census data into the rating system.
  • Generate manual rate calculations on all submitted non-experience rated cases with 2-99 lives and make pricing decisions within defined parameters.
  • Position plan designs and rates appropriately.
  • Advise/Consult with sales office personnel when submitted cases fall outside published pricing, underwriting and/or administration guidelines.
  • Reach out to brokers and sales for missing information needed to provide a quote.
  • Meet specified metrics for production, quality and turn around time.
  • Quoting authority and decision making authority of new business quotes for groups with 2 - 99 lives as deemed appropriate through pricing authority levels.
  • Approving final rates.
  • Other various functions that support workload balancing including RFP in-take.


  • College degree or 2 years business experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • High level of organization skill and the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Strong Excel and personal computer skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Team player
