Ethicon Wound Closure & Repair, a member of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, is recruiting for an Engineer Intern for their R&D group.  The Ethicon business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies-including sutures, hemostasis products, surgical staplers, trocars, energy devices and synthetic mesh devices-that are used in a wide variety of open and minimally invasive surgical procedures.


The internship is offered by the Plus Sutures Group within the Wound Closure & Repair R&D Department.  The Plus Sutures group supports ETHICON’s antibacterial sutures business.  The Internship Program is focused on providing college students with practical industrial research and development experience.


The R&D Intern will:

  • Perform hands-on processing laboratory work
  • Perform sample and prototype preparation for microbiological, analytical and physical property evaluation
  • Work with chemicals to prepare coating solutions
  • Assemble prototype equipment/fixtures
  • Follow specific protocols, keep good laboratory records, which includes data recording and data analyses
  • Assist in the preparation of study protocols and report writing.

  • Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Bio-Medical Engineering, Mechanical Engineer or Chemical Engineering with minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Candidates must be available to work full-time (40 hours/week).
  • Students who have completed a minimum of two years of college coursework year will be considered.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g. H1-B status) now or in the future. 
  • Candidates must be detail-oriented, highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks.
  • Candidates must have the ability to work individually (independently) as well as on a team.
  • Candidates need to be proficient with Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
  • A minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 is strongly preferred.
  • Must be willing to perform hands-on processing laboratory work, including sample and prototype preparation for microbiological, analytical and physical property evaluations.
  • Preferred to be able to assemble components to build prototype equipment.
