Shire Research has strategic alliance relationships with several key academic and industrial partners, with plans to grow these partnerships with a goal towards delivering novel therapeutics to patients with rare disease. The External Science Lead is responsible for identifying, developing and managing these strategic alliances within high priority disease areas to deliver innovative therapeutics to the R&D pipeline of Shire. Working with the Head of External Sciences, the External Science Lead will coordinate and execute research efforts between the alliance partners and Shire internal expertise, managing progress of the research including meeting timelines, milestones, and budget, and helping to enhance the Shire preclinical portfolio.
Development, execution, and scientific direction/oversight of the research plans between strategic partners and Shire resulting in the delivery of novel therapeutic projects to the preclinical portfolio
Identification of key external scientific research programs to support the Discovery Pipeline in areas of Rare Disease
Management and communication of research progress against the goals of the research plans
Education & Experience Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have a PhD, MD or MD/PhD with significant experience in drug discovery and development. The position will require experience in scientific alliance management, a proven track record of scientific leadership and excellent communication skills. Ideally, the candidate will have hands-on experiences in delivering novel therapeutics from idea to early clinical development.
A scientific background in neurobiology, ophthalmology, cell biology, human genetics, molecular biology, or rare and orphan disorders and/or pharmaceuticals is also a strong plus.
