The Finishing Technician III: 

  • Supports manufacturing processes by using basic electro polishing and metal finishing theories, finishing equipment and accessories to properly diagnose problems and implement corrective actions as they relate to the finishing department
  • Implements all aspects of process improvement, equipment setup, testing, documentation, problem correction and repair of equipment in a timely manner
  • Sets up and maintains annealing and heat treatment equipment
  • Operates portable power tools and hand tools, drills, wrenches, grinders and meters to trouble shoot and repair production equipment
  • Uses basic metal working principles in order to properly diagnose problems and implement corrective actions
  • Manages deadlines in completing breakdown, maintenance, and project activities
  • Makes critical decisions under pressure on breakdowns while practicing GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)
  • Participates in and works with a production team environment; Receives direction from team members as well as production/engineering supervisor/facilitator
  • Utilizes proficiency with PLC’s and electrical controls to trouble shoot and maintain production equipment
  • Supports engineering groups in implementation, tracking, and closing of ECN (Equipment Change Notice) documentation
  • Participates in multidisciplinary project teams to identify process equipment requirements for new or existing systems
  • Actively participates in plant OEE(Overall Equipment Effectiveness) initiative within Maintenance Excellence Program
  • Uses and maintains Ethicon’s inspection and measurement devices as needed to perform setups and maintain production equipment
  • Reads and works from detailed electrical diagrams and pipe layout diagrams
  • Sets up polishing, finishing and other departmental related equipment including resistance and flame annealing equipment to specification and to make recommendations on changeover reduction initiatives
  • Sets up precision equipment to specification
  • Makes recommendations on changeover reduction initiatives
  • Supports facilitator in providing direction and training to other technicians on specific systems and maintenance procedures
  • Provides machine specific training to manufacturing associates on machine operating and setup functions
  • Supports engineering groups in the development of written procedures for equipment planned maintenance
  • Participates with engineering to assist in design changes as needed
  • Makes appropriate decisions, based on production priorities, as to the criticality of equipment during breakdowns, with the initiative to repair as needed for the process
  • Supports engineering groups in conducting equipment qualifications per written protocol to include mechanical and software systems.
  • Takes a leadership role within the finishing technician group to improve overall department performance
  • Investigates, diagnoses, and coordinates repair of process equipment electrical and control system failures
  • Utilizes PE (Process Excellence) tools in identifying root cause and corrective actions while conforming to specifications and safety requirements to eliminate repetitive failures
  • Support engineering groups in the development of written procedures for the operation, testing, and validation of equipment control systems
  • Uses test equipment (Starrett Precision Measuring tools, Mitutoyo Gauge, Microscope, etc) where applicable
  • Utilizes applicable software systems as needed for the job (e.g. ComplianceWire, ADAPTIV, etc.)
  • Consistently meets required work performance targets (RE’s), if applicable
  • Support LEAN and Six Sigma Initiatives.
  • Supports Maintenance Excellence (ME2) including 6S and Operator Asset Care
  • Accurately completes records as defined within the job procedures (e.g. manual and/or electronic documentation)
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all production equipment in area assigned, keeping neat and correct records
  • Own equipment related utilization metrics for process assignment
  • Determine necessary tools and material requirements for specific assignments
  • Identify and recommend electrical and mechanical devices and components for equipment spare parts inventories.
  • Take responsibility to ensure spare parts are available to maintain equipment in proper running condition.
  • Utilizes CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing), CAMSTAR, and MES systems for data retrieval and equipment monitoring
  • Supports manufacturing in the day-to-day troubleshooting situations and actively participates on Integrated Production Team’s (IPT) to maximize production equipment uptime
  • Interfaces with appropriate manufacturing representatives to ensure manufacturing operations and projects receive effective technical support

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 2+ years of electrical, electronic, mechanical technical school OR electro polishing technology equivalent formal training OR military training/experience OR equivalent OJT (on job training) consistent with experience listed below preferred
  • 4+ years of related experience required
  • Analytical problem solving skills, basic mathematical and mechanical aptitude skills required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required
  • Basic knowledge of pipe fitting, welding and machining required
  • Ability to use machine shop equipment to fabricate or modify machine components in a breakdown situation required
  • Proficiency in PLC’s and Electrical Controls preferred
  • Ability to read blue prints required; ability to read electrical schematics preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relation skills required, both written and oral
  • Good organizational & prioritizing skills required to balance workload and priorities
  • knowledge of lean manufacturing and manufacturing processes such as KANBAN and Pull Systems preferred
  • Ability to work independently towards a general result, with creative new method required
  • Ability to complete duties that include basic welding required
  • Must be self-motivated and self-directed and capable of taking a lead position in completing duties while under pressure
  • And capable of determining needed resources in completing tasks with little or no supervision
  • Must be willing and able to work the C and/or D night shifts
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to approximately 10%
