The Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) in South San Francisco is a wholly owned subsidiary of Merck and Co., and is focused on research and early clinical development in our mission to translate scientific breakthroughs into meaningful positive impact on human health. This special site will be created beginning in 2017, and occupy an interim site on Gateway Blvd in the heart of South San Francisco. The areas of research focus for the next two years include all areas of cardiovascular medicine, metabolic disease and renal disease. A new research building is under construction next door to the interim site, and will be completely by the end of 2018 or early 2019. That new facility will also house the Merck research group currently located in Palo Alto, CA, and add oncology and immunology to the areas of exploration. The site will place science first, and be open to expanding its therapeutic focus as compelled to do so by insight generated.

A critical foundation of tomorrow's research will be use of a wide array of computational approaches, including artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will be creative, and exhibit the potential to lead our organization into new ways of thinking about science, and creating clinically meaningful new medicines. The site is open to building a small team in time, and is open to collaborations with companies and universities (especially focused on the Bay Area).

To be successful, you will need a strong and sophisticated sense of what has worked and failed in pharmaceutical research, and a conviction around what you believe is needed to be successful going forward. You will need deep and broad abilities within computational sciences, and strong teaching and influencing skills. You will be able to balance strong creativity and enthusiasm with an ability to focus and create tangible and impactful results. And you will possess a strong sense of scientific and behavioral humility, which the site's leadership values. With access to Merck's proven global R&D organization, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues that help you give life to your ideas.

We are seeking an innovative Computational Scientist to join the Merck in South San Francisco.
