Corporate Risk

Corporate Risk helps all Wells Fargo businesses identify and manage risk. The team focuses on several key risk areas including credit risk, operational risk, market risk, strategic risk, and compliance risk. Corporate Risk strives to ensure that all Wells Fargo corporate functions and lines of business soundly manage risk, comply with applicable laws and regulations, and offer products and services that meet the needs of our customers. The group provides leadership, enhances communications, assists with problem identification and solutions, and shares best practices. In addition, Corporate Risk provides an enterprise-wide view of risk, assists management and our Board of Directors in identifying and monitoring risks that may affect multiple lines of business, and takes appropriate action when business activities exceed the risk tolerance of the company.

Payments, Virtual Solutions and Innovation Group Risk

The PVSI group aligns and integrates groups from across Wells Fargo to focus on the delivery of the next generation of payments capabilities and advance our digital and online offerings. This group also invests in research, development and strategic partnerships dedicated to designing new customer experiences and products. The PVSI group includes Consumer Credit Cards and Retail Services, Deposit Products, Treasury Management and Merchant Services, Innovation, One Wells Fargo, Virtual Channels and Operations.

The Position

This role will provide strategic leadership to ensure that Credit Card/Retail Services meet or exceeds its compliance and operational risk management responsibilities and abides by all laws and regulations. This leader will be responsible for integrating compliance and operational risk within the business in an efficient, controlled and customer oriented manner. This includes managing the development, implementation and monitoring of a risk-based compliance and operational risk programs for these businesses to assure compliance with federal, state, agency, legal and regulatory requirements, as well as corporate policies and established standards to ensure prudent operational risk management. The role provides necessary oversight and serves as the principal compliance advisor to the businesses senior leaders to formulate and implement compliance and operational risk policies, procedures and controls for the business. This leader will anticipate future problems and the evolving regulatory landscape and generate innovative strategies for addressing potential scenarios before they materialize.

Specific responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as key 2nd Line of Defense lead, providing independent challenge and oversight to multiple Credit Card/Retail Services businesses and support functions.
  • Working with 1st Line of Defense to ensure successful adoption and adherence to Corporate Risk driven requirements, policies, and programs.
  • Partnering with 1st Line of Defense to ensure holistic coverage of operating landscape and preserving clearly defined roles and responsibilities across the lines of defense.
  • Building, mentoring, and guiding a talented team of compliance and operational risk professionals.
  • Maintaining an awareness of the state of compliance and operational risk exposures throughout the business.
  • Inspiring confidence and successfully managing relationships and fostering a team orientation with compliance and risk professionals, business heads, legal, audit and multiple US and non-US regulators.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key regulators and examiners to identify and influence areas of focus.
  • Acts as an independent review and evaluation body to ensure that compliance issues/concerns within the organization are being appropriately evaluated, investigated and resolved and that operational risks are being appropriately controlled and managed.
  • Maintains current knowledge of best practices in compliance and operational risk industry and proactively offers to business leaders.

The Team

The leader will report directly to Vic Albrecht, Group Risk Officer & Head of Community Bank/PVSIRisk Management. He/She will lead a team of approximately 100 team members distributed nationally.

The Candidate

This executive must be an exceptional leader and will be recognized for accomplishments related to hiring, retaining, and developing a world-class staff. Leadership, relationship management, and credibility will be determining factors in selection. Successful candidates will be articulate and possess a demonstrated leadership capability; they will have strong interpersonal effectiveness. He/She must have strong understanding of business drivers and processes and be an effective influencer that has credibility with business leaders and able to offer credible challenge as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in compliance, operational risk management (includes audit, legal, credit risk, market risk, or the management of a process or business with accountability for compliance or operational risk), or a combination of both; or 12+ years of IT systems security, business process management or financial services industry experience, of which 6+ years must include direct experience in compliance, operational risk management, or a combination of both
  • 10+ years of management experience

Other Desired Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, the successful candidate will have:

  • A seasoned leader with 12+ years of operational risk and/or compliance risk experience including 10+ years of management experience.
  • Management experience including success managing in a large corporate, multi-line business organization.
  • A strong track record and business knowledge in financial services, with strong expertise in credit card and private label business with subject-matter expertise as it pertains to banking laws and consumer protection regulations that apply to consumer lending.

  • Experience working horizontally across the organization and participating in enterprise-wide implementations of major policy and relevant risk programs across major business divisions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of strategic elements of financial, operational, technical, and regulatory environment across the company.

  • Strong interpersonal, influence and communications skills with an ability to interact effectively with a variety of contacts, to include virtual leadership experience and the ability to effectively manage and build relationships with leaders and team members in geographically dispersed environments.

  • Proven experience in building partnerships, collaborating and influencing at senior levels and across lines of business as well as with Corporate partners.
  • Demonstrated excellence at identifying stakeholders, understanding needs, and driving decision-making/resolution through a consensus building approach.

  • Ability to fluently articulate business strategy and operations; translating organizational strategies into clear objectives and business action.
  • Effective leadership ability to drive successful execution of strategic plans; ability to plan, prioritize and set goals. Must possess a sense of urgency about exceeding the objectives of the role.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and leading a team of executives as well as experience working in a rapidly changing, highly complex matrixed environment.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree.
