In January 2016, MetLife announced a plan to pursue the separation of a substantial portion of its U.S. Retail segment. The new company, Brighthouse Financial, will be a major U.S. life insurance and annuity company, with $240 billion of total assets and approximately 2.6 million insurance policies and annuity contracts in-force as of June 30, 2016. Brighthouse Financial will serve customers the way they want, need and deserve. It will focus on eliminating the complexity, confusion and cost that can get in the way of many Americans who are seeking financial security. We will bring products to the market that add value to our customers’ lives, and will be guided by a common set of values that focus on the customer and drive accountability.
Brighthouse Financial is seeking high-performing team members who are passionate about the company’s mission. We are laser-focused on adding value to our customers and minimizing complexity in every decision and action. We are building high performing teams who set the bar high and hold each other accountable.
In separating from MetLife’s technology environment, BHF has made the strategic decision to create an environment “born on the cloud,” i.e., leverage of “software as a service” (SaaS) offerings to fulfill the vast majority of business functions. In the end-state, BHF may source the delivery of various business functions through several dozen SaaS providers. In leveraging these services, we believe that we will greatly simplify how we will deliver business functions within BHF. We will remain with vendors’ standard offerings, while at the same time benefitting from the ongoing innovation that those vendors bring.
It will be the responsibility of the leader to deliver the functionality from these service providers to BHF end-users. BHF will retain some amount of internal development, though also delivered through platform- or infrastructure-as-a-service (PaaS or IaaS) hosting on the cloud (e.g., through Microsoft’s Azure or Amazon’s AWS offerings).
The delivery and ongoing operation of the centralized ecosystem will be in collaboration with a managed service provider “general contractor” (MSP GC). This vendor will provide whatever infrastructure (also hosted externally to BHF) is required to bring these services together into BHF. It will also be accountable for the ongoing operation and monitoring of that environment. While we intend to have the MSP GC bring significant expertise in the design of that environment, this vision, standards, and ultimate accountability for delivery and management of the environment will lie with the leader of the infrastructure management function.
Finally, with a “born on the cloud” approach to delivery of IT services, BHF has the opportunity to leverage leading edge concepts in infrastructure management. Agile will permeate throughout internal development as well as creation of business functions. The leader in this role will work to ensure that applicable concepts carry over into infrastructure management. Further, concepts such as “continuous integration / continuous delivery,” DevOps, and automation will be central characteristics of BHF’s future infrastructure. The leader in this role will have had direct experience in setting the vision of use of these services and is deeply knowledgeable of their impact.
