Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Muscatine, Iowa plant as an Industrial Chemist. The plant is located south of Muscatine along the Mississippi River and manufactures a wide variety of crop protection products, including Roundup ® , the world's best-selling herbicide. The person in this role works closely with chemical engineers to provide technical support and process optimization to production operations, troubleshoot and collaborate on initiatives, solve problems impacting raw material yields, capacity, quality, environmental compliance, and safety. This is a technical role with responsibility to help identify cost savings and on-stream time improvements by tracking and driving key performance indicators (KPIs).

Principal Responsibilities: 

  • Monitor and analyze operating data from the manufacturing process using statistical tools, both proactively (statistical quality/process control) and reactively (troubleshooting)
  • Understand process chemistry thoroughly to determine impact of changes on quality and material yields to identify performance leverages for cost improvement
  • Create and/or update documentation related to process operation, safety, and applicable environmental regulations
  • Assist with the development of scopes defining projects, including alternatives and cost benefit analysis
  • Assist production personnel (engineers and technicians) in troubleshooting and correcting problems related to yields, capacity, quality, environmental compliance and/or safety
  • Review key performance indicators and conversion costs pertinent to monthly raw material usage, product volumes, and technical practices
  • Working knowledge of analytical chemistry to be an effective liaison between production and analytical laboratory
  • Comply with plant safety rules and actively work to improve safety through coaching or engineered improvements
  • Support plant wide development and improvement through participation on plant wide initiatives and committees
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry
  • 5 years' experience with laboratory testing, synthesis, and experimentation
  • In-depth knowledge of organic chemistry concept
  • Experience interacting with and providing technical perspective to teams

  • 2 years' experience with laboratory testing, synthesis, and experimentation
  • In-depth knowledge of organic chemistry concept
  • Experience interacting with and providing technical perspective to teams

Desirable Skills:
  • Chemical manufacturing or related experience (e.g. R&D in chemical processes)
  • Safety or Environmental experience
  • Strong influence skills and demonstrated ability to work with leadership and employees.
  • Detail oriented with good facilitation, communication, computer, and organizational skills.
  • Computer proficiency in Windows-based programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access)

Description of Specific Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Position is in a Manufacturing office environment combined with some plant operations management activities including working around agricultural chemicals and equipment. This position requires the ability to use a computer/keyboard for extended periods of time and the ability to work a full eight-hour day within the flexible schedule of 6:00am to 5:30 pm. Limited travel and after-hours support of critical needs is expected.
