These individuals should have 3-5 years of experience - but what really matters is that they have the portfolio/examples to show the quality and depth of their work. They must be able to lead a project from start to finish.
The project requests/projects come from any group within the company. The projects can take anywhere from a few days to several months to complete. The manager does the initial feasibility assessment and, if they decide to take on the project, will pass it to the Instructional Designers who then does a need analysis. He/she will be meeting with the SMEs every step of the way - agile methodology- so by the time the project is finished, the client knows what to expect and it is up to their standards. An example of this is a training module for all of the staff to take.
Since they will be meeting with SME, they must have excellent communication skills and be able to uphold the standard of the department. These individuals should not be "yes mans" but should still have a customer representative mindset. Additionally, these individuals are not just responsible for writing, but for the programming aspect as well. These IDs must be skilled in terms of Design with Learning Theory, eLearning Theory specifically. They should know the right principles. These IDs must be comfortable working with the principal trainers to get content as well as, at times, coming up with content on their own based on talking to SME and doing research. More times than not, they will get the content from the SME.
In terms of tools and software, the team is currently using Captivate, Story line 2 and 3, and other articulate products, as well as adobe creative suite. These IDs should be skilled in these. They are currently using an in house LMS but moving to SuccessFactor in the next few weeks. These individuals do not need to be experienced in any particular LMS.
They will not have to teach in front of a classroom but experience doing so could be useful.
