**What is File-Systems/Data-Services?**
The FS/DS team is responsible for building the core clustering and filesystem technologies that drive our clustered storage products. We start by creating group-management, distributed locking and transactions, and block communication primitives. We layer on layout, allocation, caching and prefetch concepts, logical filesystem concepts, and provide a highly parallelized, highly resilient filesystem. We then build a resilient job-distribution infrastructure on top of our filesystem to help us maintain and extend it. The FS/DS team then continues to layer on technologies that observe and control the lifecycle of customer data, such as quotas, snapshots, tiering, replication, and backup.
**What is happening in File-Systems/Data-Services?**
Isilon clusters have long provided performance and ease-of-use at scale. But we cannot rest on our laurels on any of those points.
The continuous changes in CPU, drive, and networking technologies give us ever-present opportunities to push performance. That hardware evolution also provides a continuous opportunity to re-architect and rethink the entire filesystem -- how do we best leverage SSDs? How do we adjust as our bottlenecks move from drives to network; or network to cpu; or cpu to memory? Can we be journaling differently, redefining fault domains, and communicating differently? The FS/DS team has projects in all these areas.
With the growth of cloud storage and virtualized/containerized compute, customers continue to push for our cluster boundaries to be more fluid and more global -- people want simultaneous fast access to PB storage from multiple geographies. And as storage continues to grow, so do we -- how do we support single files approaching a PB, or single volumes approaching an exabyte? The FS/DS team (and Isilon in general) is investing in several technologies to make that possible.
There are projects in many other areas too -- How do customers find or manage all this data? What do backups and business-continuity look like when your data grows by many terabytes each hour? How do we define the future of storage?
**What is it like to be an engineer in FS/DS?**
We create a wide variety of technologies in FS/DS, writing in C (kernel and userspace code), C++ and python. Our engineers are all hungry to solve challenging problems. Raw intelligence counts for a lot, but the system is complex enough that no one person understands it fully, and so strong collaboration andclean architectural skills are important. On top of that, Isilon engineers are all expected to understand the customer, which often means thinking (and acting) across architectural layers, driving the right solution all of the way through the stack.
