The position requires a leader that can combine Information Technology (IT) expertise with knowledge of the healthcare environment to lead transformational change and accelerate business value by leveraging available and emerging platforms, and sourcing technology expertise to solve product development challenges in a digital ecosystem.  This role will be a member of the Vision Care IT Leadership Team and will be responsible for developing IT as a competitive advantage and enabler for the business. 


The key focus is on delivering strategic and innovative solutions to the business while assisting in managing the overall demand and prioritization. The group is focused on providing a centralized, highly responsive and intuitive interface platform for all global R&D associates to access applications to drive faster product development cycles.  This platform, and its associated applications, leverages key enterprise Integration and DnA technologies like webMethods, TribeFire, In Memory Data Grid and Internet of Things capabilities. The candidate will become part of the Consumer / Consumer Med Tech R&D IT organization, responsible for project managing multiple initiatives as well as being a hands-on technical leader with focus on developing and enhancing technical and business partner relationships.  The candidate should have strong communication skills (written and presentation).


This senior manager must bring strong thought leadership around R&D for digital product development.  He/she will work to seek out opportunities for simplification, capability enablement and standardization of the IT solutions landscape, instituting best practices and lowering costs.  In addition, with an eye towards improving business operations, he/she will focus on vendor contracts and negotiations with a charter to improve the way the organization operates. Finally, they will collaborate with and influence Vision Care R&D Executives to create and execute an IT strategy for the Vision Care business worldwide.  Additionally, the position will have responsibility for building a strong team and leadership pipeline.


This individual will be responsible for global vision and strategies, as well as execution of those strategies, in partnership with the product development organization. The responsibilities will include the end-to-end process understanding for the systems related to new product development and process engineering of these new businesses. This individual should be a passionate change agent.

  • Partner with the business partners to manage the overall IT demand & continuously manage business partner expectations.
  • Prepare and deliver regular updates and communications (verbal and written) to the Business and IT Leadership teams plus extended business partners.
  • Understand and define business drivers, requirements definition, design gap analysis, prototyping, execution and deployment activities.
  • Function as a technical application owner (TAO) for the existing technologies and applications that support this function and ensure business partners are aware of new and emerging technologies in Internet Of Things, Innovation, Research & Development and the Product Development Lifecycle and UX/Digital Design.
  • Conduct research on current / future  technologies, processes and best practices, benchmark with other internal J&J companies and external partners, and determine how best to apply new technologies in the Consumer Companies R&D organization.
  • Lead projects of large complexity and act as liaison between the various IT organizations to ensure successful delivery of initiatives to the business partners.
  • Lead efforts to standardize processes and technologies globally.
  • Manage across a global team consisting of shared resources. Build a partnership network both within and external to J&J
  • Champion the change management efforts of IT initiatives with the business partner community.
  • Interface with suppliers and vendors to evaluate software, hardware or services and make recommendations.
  • Ensure Service Level Agreements are established and meet expectations of the business partners.
  • Perform analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance activities.
  • Actively participate as core team member for key business/IT initiatives.
  • Participate in the business planning activities by identifying future business demand and ensuring appropriate funding is in the business plan.
  • Provide coaching/guidance to peers, junior team members, co-ops and/or consultants.
  • Consistently demonstrate knowledge seeking and sharing behaviors across IT organizational boundaries in the performance of daily work and encourage junior associates to do the same.
  • Apply principles, concepts, and practices of the J&J Leadership Imperatives.
  • Ensure that J&J information assets are appropriately identified and valued, and are protected by complying with and enforcing all local and worldwide security policies.
  • Ensure that security is considered and emphasized in all IT plans and actions.

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical field is preferred
  • Minimum of 6 years practical work experience as an IT analyst in a life sciences/healthcare organization is required
  • 3+ years in the Contact Lens or Diabetes product lifecycle is preferred
  • Has good understanding of business value and capabilities, and able to relate priorities to associated technology investments.
  • Experience developing and maturing processes and systems in a complex manufacturing or product discovery environment.
  • Familiarity with Research and Development, Quality and Regulatory processes and solutions is preferred
  • Experience effectively collaborating and managing stakeholders, knowledge of trends (e.g., digital, big data) is preferred
  • Expertise driving adoption to improve IT, able to synthesize leadership and stakeholder inputs into product decisions for team, previous oversight of single product offering.
  • Up to 20% travel may be required.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Successful candidates will have knowledge of any of the following: client/server, web technologies, operating systems, networking, databases, GxP requirements, Computer Systems Validation, 21 CFR Part 11, 2000, Relational Database Concepts, Project Lifecycle Theory, Licensing, Change Management, SDLC Theory, Process Excellence.
  • Considerable knowledge of healthcare, business theory.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply IT in solving business problems, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to motivate in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Able to create context around key business drivers and strategic plan, able to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
