Responsible for competently handling and processing all laboratory specimens, ensuring specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory procedures. Serves as a resource for specimen and testing information. Accurately obtains blood samples via venipuncture and capillary collection procedures with minimum customer discomfort. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures to include departmental programs, quality control, performance improvement and safety.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
High School diploma or GED required
Successful completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Training and/or Medical Assistant Program preferred

EXPERIENCE:
One year equivalent experience if not formally trained

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to laboratory safety policies and regulations. Works with minimal direction; consults with technical staff as needed. Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and the laboratory customers. Provides care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Operates general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and CRT, centrifuges and manual pipettes.

Must be able to demonstrate understanding of HCA's and St. David's "Patients First" safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures.

Recognizes that variables such as age, race, nationality, culture, disease-causing vulnerabilities, socioeconomic factors affect the patient populations under their care. Uses interventions appropriate to these factors (e.g., interpreter, dietary preferences, social service consult, etc.)

Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory customers. Ability to read and write in English.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION (REQUIRED/PREFERRED):
None required
Certified by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians preferred
