The Lactation Consultant provides current, manageable and meaningful instructions for clients of all ages in compliance with standards. The Lactation Consultant functions within the philosophy, policies and procedures of the hospital and represents the hospital and represents the hospital within and outside the organization with a general feeling of positive support. Functions include: maternal/infant dyad breastfeeding support and intervention in the inpatient setting and telephone consults, facilitation of breastfeeding education to client and professionals. The lactation consultant works as a team member with other healthcare disciplines to achieve optimal patient care outcomes.
Knowledge & Skills:
Must be able to demonstrate understanding of national patient safety initiatives and be strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and North Austin Medical Center. The Lactation Consultant works autonomously, sets priorities and makes independent decisions of a complex nature. The Lactation Consultant shall demonstrate a capacity for compassion and empathy. The Lactation Consultant interfaces directly with the public, physicians, staff, patients, administration and ancillary/support staff and departments. The Lactation Consultant maintains confidentiality of patient's medical records in compliance with HIPPA. Regular and predictable attendance is required. A new Lactation Consultant will see patients with a mentor for a period deemed appropriate to qualifications prior to seeing patients unsupported.
Required: Texas Department of Health's Phase I and Phase II Intensive Education Programs or equivalent or nursing degree.
Required: IBCLS (Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant)
Preferred: BLS, NRP
