Lead Architect

Job Location: United States : North Carolina : Cary  



MetLife is seeking an IT Lead Architect to join its centralized Enterprise Architecture team focused on delivering strategic architectural solutions that enable MetLife to meet its business goals. This Lead Architect will work closely with the Director of Channels & Integration Architecture and will be responsible for delivering conceptual and solution architecture designs across the Channels & Integration portfolio. The architect will primarily be focused on web, mobile, and API application platforms, supporting multiple global tenants. The candidate will ensure that all solution architectures and new technology acquisitions are delivered through MetLife’s architectural governance review processes and follow established enterprise reference architectures and standards. The architect will also collaborate with global IT partners in architecture and development to deliver future state architectures for the portfolios assigned.


The ideal candidate will have strong business and technology acumen in order to develop sound architecture solutions that will meet and exceed business needs. Effective communications with IT and Business associates at all levels including senior management will be required. This position may require some travel depending on current assignment, as well as working with global partners in time zones outside of the U.S.



  • Leads creation, analysis, and review of assigned solution architectures

  • Collaborates with other architects to ensure integrity and security of assigned solution architectures

  • Leads or participates in multiple, complex or large-scale projects as assigned

  • Leads or participates in project planning of architecture activities and provides estimates for architecture work

  • Ensures maintenance and quality of related project documents and/or architecture artifacts (e.g., Solution Architecture Document)

  • Leads or participates in the development of Future State Architectures for a given portfolio

  • Maintains a broad, deep understanding of current business applications and technical platforms in the Channels & Integration portfolio

  • Maintains a broad, deep understanding of multiple industry technologies and reference architectures

  • Leads the development of horizontal solutions for projects / programs

  • Partners with application development teams in validating and implementing proposed solutions.

  • Partner with global partners in architecture and IT to ensure that global solutions accommodate local/regional requirements, including language support and data sovereignty restrictions

  • Prepares presentations tailored for various audiences (e.g., executive management, business partners, IT partners, etc.)

  • Conducts product assessments and vendor evaluations as needed, and guides these through the approved software governance processes

  • Ensures architecture standards (reference architectures / approved technology stacks) and best practices are adhered to

  • Has ability to maintain big picture focus while working on individual solution architectures

  • Proactively keeps management informed of project status, issues, and dependencies

  • Provide ongoing support for Application Development teams in resolving technological issues (e.g., technology compatibility issues, technology implementation issues, etc.)



  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years of related architecture experience

  • 3 + years of hands on experience in software engineering/development

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or engineering discipline

  • Experience leading and/or working in a matrixed team

  • Demonstrated inter-personal and consultative proficiency

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication proficiency

  • Demonstrated influencing and negotiating skills

  • Experienced at effectively interacting with associates at all levels

  • Proficient at working independently with minimal supervision while consistently meeting all expectations

  • Ability to lead and/or work simultaneously on multiple large, complex  projects

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more architecture disciplines (e.g., application architecture, data architecture, infrastructure architecture, integration architecture, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience in understanding, analyzing, applying, and communicating abstract architectural concepts

  • Proficient at working within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) in a large enterprise

  • Broad knowledge of Big Data concepts, design patterns and technologies (e.g., Hadoop)

  • Broad knowledge of API Management, API Design and API security (OAuth, Basic Auth, etc.)

  • Experience with major languages and design patterns (e.g., Java, Spring, JEE, JavaScript/Node.js, HTML, Microservices, Angular.js, Hybrid Mobile (i.e., Cordova), JSON, XML, MVC, Object Oriented design, etc. )

  • Experience with multiple integration technologies and patterns such REST, ETL, as MFT, SOA,  MQ, etc.

  • Experience with information architecture and multiple database technologies (e.g. RDBMS, NoSQL, HBase, Hive, etc)

  • Experience with cloud concepts (IaaS, SaaS, PaaS, Serverless) and major cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure or AWS

  • Experience with security architecture patterns and technologies (e.g., web access management, single sign on, federation, data encryption, etc.)


  • Experience with Web Content Management (WCM) products and usage in a large enterprise environment

  • Experience working with customers/partners outside of the US, including Asia and Latin America

  • Experience with using or integrating with CRM systems, including SalesForce.com
