Responsibilities

The National Network Operations organization in Verizon Wireless manages business critical platforms that provide 4G and 3G data services to Verizon Wireless customers. Systems Engineering team in NNO is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join their growing team responsible for the design, integration, performance and capacity of physical and virtual LINUX servers and appliances providing DNS, GSLB and NTP services to business critical infrastructure including LTE, VoLTE, IMS and cloud.

Detailed Responsibilities:

Systems Design: Partner with Product Development, Planning and other System Engineers to create detailed system designs in accordance with internal standards.  Ensure hardware and software selections meet all design criteria for each given platform.  Ensure designs have no single points of failure.  Ensure systems are engineered to meet availability requirements of business defined service tiers. Guide teams on DNS, GSLB and NTP best practices.

Systems Integration:  Work with appropriate VZW resources (Commercial Data Systems, Data Services, Maintenance Engineering, IT, NSS, etc.) to ensure that the approved system designs are properly integrated into the production networks.  Ensure that appropriate interfaces are in place to integrate with provisioning and billing systems.  Perform alarm integration with appropriate NSS systems to provide platform visibility into the NOC.

System Enhancements:  Work with appropriate stakeholders (Product Development, MTCE, Planning, Operations and vendor teams) to specify new capabilities to support business and operational needs, drive timely delivery of those enhancements and integrate new features into existing platforms. Work with vendor teams and other stakeholders to conduct functional testing and validate the results.

System Performance:  Provide feedback and alternate engineering solutions to solve performance and fault tolerance issues.  Identify the system key performance indicators (KPI’s) prior to commercial launch.   Ensure we are leveraging existing tools or deploying new tools to monitor the KPI’s.  Ensure that alarms are in place when critical thresholds are crossed.  Investigate and resolve issues that trigger alarms relative to system performance KPI’s.

System Capacity:  Work with planning and vendor teams to develop and implement subscriber demand models that are utilized for forecasting and trending system utilization.  Validate performance and capacity runs in the vendor environment to ensure that the system delivers the service to its rated capacity.  Provide monthly reporting of subscriber demand verses known capacity.  Trigger growth jobs when trending of demand data crosses pre-defined engineering thresholds.
