Role synopsis
The Planner is responsible for processing quality work orders and producing work packs, following the Work Management standard, that significantly attribute to safe and reliable operations. The Planner is responsible for planning Maximo work order tasks by clearly identifying the work needed by craft and associated equipment and materials to complete the job safely and efficiently. During the planning process, the Planner troubleshoots the root cause of equipment malfunctions and accurately formulate corrective actions necessary to address identified problems. The Planner will Identify recurring equipment maintenance issues, root causes and solutions to prevent reoccurrence. The Planner will also lead and coach the offshore team on the standards contained in the Gulf of Mexico Maintenance Work Management Guide.

Key accountabilities
  • Responsible for independently generating high quality job plans and work packs for complex, multi-discipline work to allow efficient scheduling, assignment and execution of work
  • Responsible for identifying permits needed
  • Responsible for following Global Work Management processes and standards within planning activities and monitoring the agreed upon KPIs, taking appropriate actions to close the deviation from target
  • Responsible for identifying improvement opportunities and basic defect elimination in the day to day execution of work
  • Responsible for ensuring personal competency development tasks are completed
  • Responsible for maintaining healthy relationships and effective collaboration with other Planners and other teams to improve performance
  • Responsible for daily backlog management, within their area of responsibility, to clean up and prioritize work
  • Responsible for modifying job plans based on feedback received
  • Responsible for requesting modification or creation of master data such as new materials, new locations, description changes, etc
  • Responsible for conducting job / field walk-downs for the work
  • Responsible for maintaining job plan libraries and ensuring Job Plans are complete, accurate and easily accessible to all
  • Responsible for setting realistic Target Dates for execution of the work
  • Responsible for setting realistic Required by Dates for procurement of material and services
  • Responsible for identifying the people, tools, materials, services, and procedures needed for a quality work pack
  • Responsible for expenditure of the R&M budget within delegation of financial authority
  • Responsible for assisting in deploying Global Work Management programs
  • Function as a Maintenance Work Management Standard Subject Matter Expert, Trainer, and Coach
  • Improve planner work processes across the region
  • Apply failure analysis and other trouble shooting techniques to determine the cause of equipment malfunctions, accurately formulate corrective actions necessary to address identified problems, and develop strategies to mitigate reoccurrences
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the maintenance program and provide input to the Maintenance Execution Manager for the revision / development of strategic maintenance plans
  • Validate that work performed in the field meets BP and industry standards through application of BP technical practices and industry standard knowledge
  • Provide input to the Maintenance Execution Manager for development of the annual maintenance plans and budget
  • Order material and issue requisitions for services and equipment following all procurement policies. If parts are not available in stores for a job being planned, ensure that materials required have been item mastered and added to the materials plan of the work order
  • Review all vendor submitted work packages for compliance with BP's processes prior to sending to the Maintenance Team Lead
  • For repeatable work scopes, create job plan templates that may be reused for future jobs thus simultaneously enhancing future planning productivity and long term maintenance strategies. Utilize existing job plan library templates when possible, modify existing or create new job plans templates as needed. Update job plans in Maximo to include man-hour estimates, proper crafts, tasks, materials, procedures, drawings, tools, and applicable technical specifications associated with equipment. Identify and update errors in Job Plans as errors are discovered. Submit requests to correct Bills of Materials as errors are discovered
  • Drive improved facility performance by systematically reviewing feedback from completed work packages to identify opportunities for improvement to planning accuracy and completeness
  • Actively participate in the Quarterly Planner Workshops and Bi-weekly Planner network meetings to facilitate Planner standardization and development


Essential Education
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Technical degree preferred


Essential experience and job requirements
  • 10+ years of experience in planning and/or leading maintenance execution in the oil and gas industry or related field
  • 5+ years of maintenance craftsmen experience, required
  • 2+ years of maintenance craftsmen experience in the offshore environment, preferred
  • Required to become a Maintenance Work Management Standard Subject Matter Expert
  • Sufficient leadership skills to be able to:

  • Strong background and knowledge in operations related to the Oil and Gas industry
  • Journeyman in Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Automation, Operations, or Marine Equipment field with in depth knowledge of executing maintenance work
  • Experience in preparing job and work plans including scope, skills identification, time, cost estimates, resource availability, and operational coordination, preferred
  • Experience communicating and interfacing with all levels of company and outside contacts

Sufficient knowledge of typical off-shore process equipment to be able to:
  • Describe the various types of equipment that is generally used off-shore
  • Explain how the various types of equipment operate including instrumentation and controls
  • Demonstrate equipment start-up and shutdown procedures

Sufficient research and information gathering abilities to be able to:
  • Identify technical drawings typically used in process operations: P&ID's, simplified flow diagrams, block diagrams, logic diagrams, isometric drawings, DCS schematics, equipment specific diagrams, electrical diagrams and legends
  • Describe in general terms, the information found on each type of diagram. Identify the symbols used in facility diagrams
  • Read technical drawings and identify / locate major pieces of unit equipment
  • Use technical drawings for troubleshooting minor process problems
  • Reference technical specifications for torque, welds, paint, pipes, valves, and GOC
  • Utilize material master lists
  • Research vendor documents
  • Obtain vendor budgetary quotes

Sufficient digital tools utilization abilities to be able to:
  • Create, update and print simple documents in MS Word
