Job Description

The Strategy & Analysis function within the STEP Division is responsible for supporting the President of Consumer Banking and his Chief of Staff with top strategic projects and initiatives. In addition to strategy work, other S&A deliverables include the creation of presentations for the DFS/Bank Board of Directors, meetings with Board members, EC Off-Sites, Operating Plans, meetings with regulators and rating agencies, investor day, etc.

The S&A team is organized to support the Chief of Staff through Senior Managers. Each Senior Manager team (at a minimum) includes a Manager, Project Manager and Senior Associate/Associate. The Senior Manager and Manager positions are outlined below for context, while the rest of this document provides more detail into the Strategy & Analysis Manager position.

S&A Manager
  • Leads adhoc and recurring analysis performed by junior team members
    • Understands question(s) that the analysis aims to answer (capable of asking clarifying questions to drive at questions underlying analyses)
    • Is able to define key milestones, align with leadership, and manage to agreed-upon timeline and scope
    • Is capable of describing asks to the team member(s) performing the analysis, providing guidance as needed without taking over the work stream, knowing when to step in when deadlines are at risk, and successfully evaluating quality of the work (e.g., accuracy, effectiveness)
  • Facilitates meetings with business partners (includes Directors and VPs)
    • Can articulate purpose of the meeting, define agenda, identify necessary prep materials (as appropriate) and create a participant list that aligns with the stated purpose
    • Is able to synthesize key insights and use them to evolve his or her own thinking (e.g., approach to an initiative, recognize new pain point)
    • Is accountable for capturing (or ensuring that a member of the team captures) action items and clearly communicates them to stakeholders
  • Has clear understanding of what needs to be accomplished; capable of asking targeted questions to obtain clarity and able to evolve understanding based on answers received
  • Able to create a defensible framework for ambiguous questions or problems; capable of articulating rationale for approach taken
  • Provides inputs and recommendations based on research and understanding of Strategic initiatives, even without the benefit of complete information; understands the risks associated with incomplete information
  • Leverages team, business partner contacts, data and research to deliver credible, fact based, recommendations
  • Can communicate clearly, succinctly, and logically, particularly in prepared verbal presentations and written documents
  • Is able to develop and motivate junior team members and manage their morale
  • Promotes a risk-aware culture, ensures efficient and effective risk and compliance management practices by adhering to required standards and processes.


    Support project planning and execution of projects and recurring deliverables
  • Define plan and resources
  • Estimate timeline and key milestones (e.g., client reviews)
  • Identify key stakeholders (including content providers)
  • Understand how the ask varies (if at all) from previous years
  • Deliver clear and succinct communications
  • Adapt based on feedback
  • Deliverables include DFS/Bank Board of Directors presentations, meetings with Board members, EC Off-Site Materials, Operating Plans, meetings with regulators and rating agencies, investor day
    Support Consumer Banking Strategic Projects
  • Understand question being asked
  • Develop preliminary hypotheses for investigation
  • Work with Senior manager to develop coherent, logical framework
  • Assist PMs and Associate team members in structuring analysis
  • Work with VP in each of the business lines to gather information
  • Understand when to escalate issues and risks to Senior Manager and/Chief of Staff
    Develop and refine problem solving and management skills and support development of junior staff
  • Co-create development plans for each team member
  • Assess performance and provide feedback at least every 6 week (Revisit cadence in June to determine whether a different STEP cadence is more appropriate)
  • Ensure team development goals are entered into the system, supported, and monitored for progress
    Support Other STEP team functions: Support talent initiatives



Required Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of banking products and services
  • Understanding of drivers of profitability in consumer banking of both deposit and lending products
  • Proficiency with advanced analytical techniques
    Required Skills
  • Strong analytical skills, problem structuring and solving
  • Advanced power point and excel skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail
    Required Experience
  • 8+ years within financial services or related management consulting experience
  • Direct experience with problem structuring and solving. Experience identifying tasks that need to be completed to reach an end result
    Required Education
  • Degree in Finance, Economics, Marketing or a related field
  • MBA preferred, strong direct practical experience may be substituted
