**We are seeking Managing Counsel (Med Pay/PIP) for any one of the following locations:

+ Iowa (Des Moines)

+ New York (Elmsford, Liverpool)

+ Pennsylvania (Harrisburg/Harleysville)

+ Florida (Gainesville)

+ Ohio (Columbus)

**This position will reside in a Claim zone location/Claim Office within the aforementioned areas.

**PIP experience preferred.

The Personal Lines Claims Legal Medical (First Party Med Pay/PIP) Managing Counsel will be both a leader/manager of associates as well as an individual contributor providing legal support to various personal lines home office and zone Claims business units/clients on issues related to First Party Med Pay/PIP issues/questions (policy language/coverage, vendor contracts, corporate level programs, etc.). The Managing Counsel position will be responsible for pro-actively developing strategy and processes to ensure the business needs are met, while mitigating potential legal risk to the Companies.

This Managing Counsel position is responsible for a total of 4 AGC level attorneys (excluding the Managing Counsel; and includes one open AGC level attorney FTE), all of which are direct reports. This Managing Counsel position supervises and provides managerial support and backup for all attorneys within the Medical Legal team; and performs management and administrative responsibilities, including performance reviews, coaching and feedback, salary administration, budget and career development planning.

In addition to managing/leading associates, the Managing Counsel will have the responsibility of dealing with a multitude of inbound legal service requests primarily from the Medical Claims organization, but may also include, but is not limited to requests from P&C Compliance and other practice groups (e.g. Litigation, Product, etc.) of OCLO. These requests vary greatly in size and scope, but always directly impact Claims business processes and overall risk posture. The role requires an advanced level of understanding of the Personal Lines Claims First Party Med Pay/PIP business and Claims processes, particularly as they overlap with other areas of P&C (e.g. Product, Casualty and Commercial Claims) and the company as a whole; and requires managerial skills. This associate will support all personal lines P&C First Party Med Pay/PIP related businesses/brands within Nationwide.

Role Summary

The Managing Counsel Leader oversees the work of a team of attorneys and may include Paralegals or other legal staff, within a legal specialty in its entirety to ensure that all legal services are provided in one or more major areas. Serves as the chief counsel for one or more assigned areas. The Managing Counsel Individual Contributor does not oversee the work of a team, but provides high level subject matter expertise in one or more specific areas. Both leaders and individual contributors focus on client relationships, processes, procedures, and significant matters.

Key Responsibilities

(10%) - Leads, works directly on or provides subject matter expertise on significant, high-risk or complex legal matters. Provides the highest level of subject matter expertise for a legal specialty.

(10%) - Initiates cases or projects on behalf of clients. Has primary responsibility to the client.

(10%) - Regularly deals with senior management of the Department or the Company on legal matters within his or her area of legal expertise. Has input into or influence on Company decision-making.

(10%) - On behalf of the Company or the area of expertise, has significant interaction with persons outside of the Company.

(10%) - May receive matters directly from the Chief Legal Officer, but usually receives matters from a Deputy General Counsel, Divisional General Counsel or senior management of the Company.

(10%) - Keeps informed of new legislative and case law activity in area of expertise, and keeps Deputy General Counsel, Divisional General Counsel and appropriate management of Company informed, as appropriate.

(10%) - Usually manages a group of several attorneys (and possibly related paralegals and support staff) within a single area of law or supporting a limited number of specific business units within the Company.

(10%) - Implements strategy, leads teams of attorneys and/or outside counsel to plan and execute cases, projects or assignments.

(10%) - Makes decisions and furnishes opinions on matters of significant importance to the company and its affiliates.

(10%) - Develops objectives for implementation of Department 10. or Company legal initiatives.

Education/Certification/Licenses

Education: JD degree from an accredited law school. Currently licensed as an attorney in an appropriate U.S. jurisdiction.

Experience/Skills

Experience: A seasoned attorney in an area of law. Typically has ten or more years of relevant legal experience and some management experience has significant experience with or knowledge of an area of law, and who has direct official management responsibility over several other attorneys. Considered the subject matter expert within his or her area of legal expertise. Complex legal practices and procedures. Project management concept and techniques.

Skills/Competencies: Verbal and written communication skills for contacts with all levels of management and clients. Analytical ability to interpret statutes, regulations, insurance policies and other contracts. Decision-making ability to set work priorities and make recommendations. Ability to lead cross-functional projects. Ability to lead, initiate, organize and coordinate complex projects and/or cases. Significant negotiation skills. Leadership skills: team building concepts, motivating and influencing. Supervisory and management skills. Significant professional and/or civic involvement.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
