The Managing Director – Private Markets, Benefit Investing reports to the Chief Investment Officer of the Johnson and Johnson Pension Trust. He/she develops and executes the investment strategy across private real estate, private credit, and private equity and advises the CIO on private market suitability across different plans and regions.  He/she also “owns” the entire private market investment process from start to finish across all illiquid investments. This is a critical leadership position within the investment team and will vote on all investments (public and private) globally for the company’s $40+ billion pool of assets.


Major Responsibilities:

  • He/she uses strong investment expertise, experience and market knowledge to develop and make appropriate private market asset allocation recommendations for Johnson and Johnson pension trusts globally
    • Advises CIO on suitability and role of illiquid investments based on local regulatory frameworks, governance, market opportunity and liability characteristics
    • Communicates private market strategy to stake holders globally
  • He/she oversees all aspects of the private market investment activity including overall direction and strategy, identification of appropriate funds and investment managers, investment and operational due diligence and all related hiring, and monitoring of investment managers
    • Performance of private market investments
    • Researches and provides relevant benchmarks for private market investments
    • Develops pipeline of private market opportunities for investment consideration though establishing and maintaining general partner relationships
    • Networks with other institutional investors to identify and monitors top investment managers/funds
    • Leads private market due diligence and negotiates limited partnership agreement terms
    • Works closely with the CIO to document and implements underwriting processes and procedures
    • Provides CIO with ratings and rankings for private market investments
    • Provides CIO with consolidated portfolio company characteristics
    • Identify and diligence new strategic and tactical investment opportunities
    • Presents private market performance and strategy to relevant investment committees
  • Leads the hiring and development of private market portfolio manager positions
    • Identifies and recruits staff consistent with position requirements
    • Coaches and identifies top succession candidates
    • Ensures staff compliance with documented due diligence and monitoring procedures

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, and/or Statistics is required
  • CFA, CAIA, CPA or MBA preferred
  • A minimum 10 years of institutional investing experience with specific knowledge of private markets required
  • Knowledge of ERISA and other regulatory investment requirements is preferred
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills to manage a significant number of relationships with external managers and internal company staff
  • Exceptional analytical skills required
  • Comprehensive knowledge of investment, finance, economic practices and performance measurement required
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of investments, industry dynamics and limited partner terms required
  • Prior people management experiences required
  • Position requires approximately 30% global travel
  • Position is located in New Brunswick, NJ
