Position Summary:
This position performs a variety of secretarial tasks in support of physicians and other allied healthcare providers. The position is accountable for ensuring accuracy and completeness of all documents. Tasks include but not limited to transcribing medical or non-medical dictation and correspondence; maintaining care provider calendars; scheduling meetings; answering telephones, and providing related follow-through; process all routine or consultation send outs as well as pathology subpoenas; maintain the medical record; filing; preparing reports, meeting minutes, and presentation materials; and maintaining records (i.e., continuing medical education, tumor board etc.) As a medical secretary in this area, transcribing pathology reports into Meditech software program, ordering additional testing, apply applicable billing, efficiently obtain pathologists for frozen sections and timely obtaining cytotechnologist for rapid FNA evaluations are daily activities. Routinely serves as a resource and mentor to others as opportunities arise. Must demonstrate initiative, proficiency, and good judgment to optimize the use of physician's and other allied healthcare provider's time. Strong organizational and communication skills and a commitment to quality and excellence in service are important components of the role.Qualifications: Position Requirements:
- Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
- This position requires formal medical secretary and/or transcriptionist training (minimum of six credits of medical transcription) or a minimum of two years recent office experience which included medical transcription. Must successfully complete a RCH medical transcription test.
- This position also requires experience in interpersonal and telephone communication skills regarding frequent physician questions or inquiries regarding pathology cases. This specifically requires a working knowledge of how pathology tissues are handled and specific outsourced testing procedures and protocols.
Requires excellent application of grammar, punctuation, and English usage. Should be able to understand diverse accents and speech variations. Must have computer experience and possess proficiency on technical office equipment (computer, printer, dictation equipment, phone system, fax machine, etc.). Must possess a high-level skill in organization, clerical aptitude, and attention to detail, excellent written and oral communication skills, and interpersonal relations. Requires good decision-making and judgment. Requires the ability to prioritize work and follow through independently, handle a variety of tasks, and work collaboratively and professionally. Must be able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Medical secretary and/or transcriptionist work experience, experience with secretarial/clerical software, and ability to work with numbers and statistics, preferred.
