JOB TITLE: Manager, Strategic Tax
JOB SUMMARY
The Manager, Strategic Tax is involved with establishing operational objectives and work plans, and delegating assignments regarding Charter’s tax policy efforts and fulfilling the tax audit function for the Company to legally minimize the taxes paid by the Company upon audit.
The Manager will also be responsible for reviewing objectives to determine success. The Manager will be involved in developing, modifying and executing company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for supporting tax policy efforts which includes:
•Working with the Company’s government affairs teams, outside counsel, lobbyists and State Cable Associations on both proactive and reactive tax legislation and administrative efforts
•Analyzing the impact of proposed tax legislation
•Monitoring proposed legislation and litigation affecting the Company
•Supporting the development of strategies to effectively support or oppose specific legislation
Responsible for managing tax audits which includes:
•Planning, supervising and managing the tax audit function
•Responding to audit inquiries and information requests
•Writing and reviewing protests of tax assessments
•Managing outside service providers, such as accounting and law firms, that assist with the audit, protest, appeals and litigation function
•Representing the Company in front of tax administrators during the audit, protest and appeal process
•Working with tax operations to appropriately account for and reserve tax liabilities related to audit exposures
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
Effective oral and written communications skills, including legal research and writing and the ability to explain complex tax theory to not only taxing jurisdiction representatives but also to policy makers which may have little to no tax background
Strong interpersonal skills, including coaching and mentoring ability
Strong knowledge of multiple tax areas (property tax, transaction tax, income tax)
Solid understanding of financial accounting, the communication industry and legislative process, and
Strong project management skills
Education
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
Related Work ExperienceNumber of Years
Tax experience, including Big 4 accounting firm or law firm 5+
Management experience1+
Prior experience in tax policy and communications industry preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must have the ability to travel to various conferences and tax administrator meetings to support tax legislative and administrative initiatives and the audit function
Office environment
