MTS2, Software Engineer, Structured Data

AbouteBay’sStructuredDataMission

Over a billion items are for sale on eBay. Almost all of them are new-in-the-box and sold at fixed price. Additionally, eBay is still the best place to search for unique items at auction. We enable tens of millions of people to supplement their income, or go into business for themselves, with little or no capital investment. While we certainly care about our (very healthy) revenue, we also care about the impact we have on the people whose lives we touch.

We are shifting from a listing-based approach to a product semantic. This major initiative at eBay entails changes across our entire technology stack, from massive data stores to individual user experiences. With a combination of traditional programming and machine learning, we advise sellers on the most effective pricing, and buyers on the least cost. We help sellers post items in less time with greater accuracy and more information. We help buyers find what they want based on the most general or the most carefully directed searches. We show competing products, accessories, and the best deals for similar products. Everything we do is gradually being done better because it is increasingly based on structured product data instead of unstructured listings.

Do you want to work at a company that is driven (yet sane), healthy (yet taking the initiative to further evolve), solidly successful (yet still in touch with the people who rely on it and work for it)? If so, we’d like to hear from you.

As a senior hands-on contributor on the Applied Machine Learning team, you could be working on new functionality that combines traditional programming, a rules engine, and machine learning to improve the information we display on individual product listings. You might also help develop infrastructure that facilitates training and tuning of machine learning models.
