Nurse Extern PRN
This paid 8 week summer program is designed specifically for BSN nursing students between their junior and senior year of nursing school. This program will provide Externs with rich experiences about the interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to care at OU Medical System. Externs will not only work on a "home" unit with expert staff, but will also partner with other members of the healthcare team throughout the system to witness the power of teamwork to enhance patient care.
Externs will also be assigned mentors to guide them in exploring evidence-based practices and current research findings and will complete a professional project that will impact healthcare team members.
The Extern Program will begin June 4 and will end Aug 1, 2018. Nurse Externs will not be required to work the week of July 2, 2018.
Positions available at OU Medical Center Edmond.
Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA required. Cover letter and resume required. Transcript will be requested for interview.
Applications accepted November 6 - December 1, 2017. Interviews will take place December 18 - 21, 2017.
Nurse Extern PRN
Under direct supervision, as a nursing student will work with a mentor in an area of clinical focus.
The Nurse Extern will work with a bedside mentor who will provide training and expertise to help prepare the Nurse Extern for a professional career in nursing while performing basic patient care such as baths, vitals, dressing changes and documentation. Each Extern will have practice opportunities in an area of clinical focus such as Pediatrics, Perioperative, Emergency, Cardiovascular, Oncology or Women's Services. In addition, the Extern will have the opportunity to partner with nurses in expanded or advance practice roles such as Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioners, Pain Management Nurses or Case Managers. The Extern will be afforded structured experiences with other healthcare team members such as Child Life Specialists, Pharmacists or Chaplains.
*Education: Current RN student at Oklahoma BSN program, between the Junior and Senior year with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to UCO students.
*Licensure/Certification: BLS Healthcare Provider
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of nursing techniques and practices. Ability to perform basic patient assessment. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and coworkers. Computer skills. Good problem solving skills.
Physical Requirements (with or without accommodation):
Requires ability to walk and/or stand for much of the work day. Requires ability to lift/carry items weighing up to 35 pounds. Requires ability to move patients as needed for treatment. Must be able to climb, kneel, stoop and perform assigned duties under semi-stressful situations. Work involves considerable bending, twisting, reaching and pushing/pulling of equipment. Will be frequently exposed to blood, body fluids and/or communicable diseases.
