ROLE SUMMARY Support vivarium operations by managing an assigned portion of the Groton vivarium, delivering flawless animal care and welfare. First line manager of non-exempt staff located at the Groton site. Work with the management team to assure the quality of care and the animal facility environment is in compliance with local and federal regulations and AAALAC International guidelines. Contribute to quality assurance and operational efficiency programs as directed. Provide support to the Director of Operations to help ensure resources are aligned with WRD prioritization. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES Assure that the care and welfare of laboratory animals is maintained in compliance with or exceeding local, state, and federal regulations and AAALAC International guidelines Manage and engage animal care and technical staff at the Groton CT site ensuring clear expectations of performance and adherence to established policies and procedures Assist in the hiring, mentoring, training and development of a diverse population of colleagues Assist with a centralized CM training program for research animal care and use for animal care staff, principal investigators and research technicians throughout WRD Participate in the direction of a centralized CM program of occupational health and safety for all individuals having significant contact with research animals Act as an interface with the research community customer and ensure basic husbandry to complex specialty technical services is provided Identify methods and procedures that have potential to increase staff safety, work flow, operational efficiency and fiscal responsibility resources Work with CM colleagues at other sites to share practices in managing resources and standardizing operations where appropriate Responsible for development and implementation of appropriate quality assurance programs and effective management of physical resources within CM May be required to work under one of the following: the United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act and associated Regulations and Standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Good Laboratory Practices, Public Health Service Policy and/or AAALAC accreditation standards. QUALIFICATIONS Educational Background: BS/BA in related field required. LATG certification required; CMAR preferred. Work Experience: Progressive supervisory experience in a laboratory animal setting Supervisory experience in a pharmaceutical setting preferred A competent manager who demonstrates adequate depth of technical/line knowledge to coach direct reports and works well in a matrixed global organization In general, a colleague at this level will have a minimum 5 years of experience. All colleagues should have functional knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, calendar management and Internet Explorer. Colleagues should be able to use on-line systems such as time tracking and document management. (e.g. SharePoint, Activity Tracker) Knowledge and use of other systems based upon job function may be required.
