The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting opportunity for an Outside Machinist / Millwright in the Plastics area at Seadrift, Texas.

Job Summary:

This role will allow you to work in multiple operating plants while interacting with a highly motivated workforce. The Outside Machinist / Millwright will be responsible for troubleshooting and repairing a variety of process and rotating equipment.


  • The Outside Machinist / Millwright will be responsible for troubleshooting and repairing a variety of process and rotating equipment used in industrial processing. The mechanical equipment may include ANSI pumps, various types of compressors, blowers, fans, gearboxes, mixers, extruders and agitators.
  • This job requires hands-on field work to determine cause of equipment failure, locate spare parts, and install spare parts using repair procedures and machinist techniques for alignment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable in the maintenance of and the proper installation/replacement of rolling element bearings, single and double mechanical seals, shaft couplings and rotating shaft assemblies, and general rotating equipment of all types.
  • Procedure use - this includes field use, review, revise, and development of procedures.
  • Be competent in the use of the maintenance tools to include measuring tools such as inside/outside micrometers, depth gauges, etc., for shaft to shaft alignment.
  • Current, valid US driver's license.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner. Safety is a top priority at Dow. Every individual at Dow is expected to make safety a priority.
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the job. This position requires physical work, handling equipment, motors, shafts, stair climbing, etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and have the ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders.
  • Able to communicate with a very diverse population which is spread across the site.

  • Effectively work and maintain relationships with the Natural Work Teams and key stakeholders with diverse perspectives and background is essential including Engineers, Operations personnel, and co-workers to identify and resolve technical issues
  • Physically able to use standard safety equipment which is rated for 300 pounds or less.
  • Able to work on a 4-10 schedule (4 days per week at 10 hours per day) with overtime as dictated by business needs. Participates in an after hour call rotation for night and weekend coverage.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Optic and/or Laser alignment techniques.
  • Familiarity with Extrusion equipment consisting of extruders, pelleters, and gearboxes.
  • Familiarity with Compressor both reciprocating and centrifugal.


  • Must have a High School diploma or GED and one of the following:
    • 2 year degree in a mechanical type craft
    • NCCER certified in Millwright or Mechanical type craft (NCCER Certification obtained through an Instructor Led Training Program is a preference)
    • 2 or more years of experience as a Millwright
