Specialty Hospital offers specialized, interdisciplinary, compassionate programs in a medical environment that integrates healing and recovery through four main programs of excellence: Cardiopulmonary Program - ventilator and/or tracheostomy weaning and complications of chronic lung disease; Wound Management Program - decubitus, circulatory, and diabetic ulcers, and non-healing surgical wounds; Infectious Disease Program - treatment of multiple infectious disease processes; and Complex Medical/Rehabilitative Program - provide intensive medical management.

Summary of Position Goals and Duties:

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), under the direction of the nurse, assists in providing nursing care to a designated group of patients. The patient care technician assists the patient in performing activities of daily living and monitoring the patient for specific needs. The PCT/CNA will assist the nurse in completing complex treatments for the patient and to follow the direction of the nurse in completing various tasks associated with the nursing care for the designated group of patients. The Patient Care Technician will also tend to the patient's individual needs while attempting to encourage the patient to reach a higher level of independence.

Patient Findings and Documentation
1. Obtains & records accurate vital signs, accuchecks, and I&O
2. Reports changes in patient's condition immediately to nurse
3. Communicates on an on-going basis, to include beginning, during & end of shift
4. Reports abnormal findings immediately

Patient Safety
1. Identifies patient using 2 identifiers
2. Completes PCT - PCT rounding at beginning & end of shift
3. Follows the 3 P's for all patients (pain, positioning, potty)
4. Utilizes medical equipment appropriately
5. Completes restraint documentation on rounds
6. Follows patient transfer status as posted
7. Responds appropriately to patient alarms and call bells
8. Reports any patient safety concerns to the primary nurse, i.e.: patient at risk to fall

Patient Rights
1. Provides support to patient & family appropriately
2. Treats patients with dignity and care
3. Provides emotional support to patient & family with end of life issues
4. Respects cultural differences when meeting the needs of the individual
5. Maintains patient confidentiality & privacy at all times
6. Observes for abuse & reports to appropriate discipline per policy
7. Respects patient's desire, decision & authority in directing care

Patient Nutrition
1. Reinforces patient & family with dietary education
2. Assists patient with meal trays and feeding & documents appropriately
3. Follows all swallowing & feeding precautions
4. Documents & notifies nurse of any feeding issues

Role Responsibilities
1. Completes all activities of daily living for patients & documents appropriately
2. Completes assignments in a timely manner & utilizes time effectively
3. Prioritizes assignment of patient care on an ongoing basis through shift
4. Completes preventative care related to skin and infection prevention
5. Assists with wound care treatments as appropriate
6. Obtains lab specimens per policy

Age Specific Criteria
1. Identifies patient specific needs regarding age
2. Provides appropriate level of assistance with age specific criteria
3. Provides a safe environment for artificial airway patients
4. Provides clear, concise instructions to patients with altered communication

Environment of Care
1. Cleans & restocks unit as appropriate (PPE supplies)
2. Ensure patient rooms are neat & clean
3. Identifies any situation that creates an "at risk" environment
4. Demonstrates knowledge of & performs appropriately during Safety & Disaster Plans
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • A Certified Nurse Assistant training course is strongly preferred
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
  • A current state of Florida issued Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) License is required; or a previous Military Corpsman, or a current nursing student having completed the first clinical course in the hospital setting, or proof of licensure as a nurse in a country outside the United States is required
  • A current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) card is required
  • A dysrythmia course by the end of first year of employment at Specialty Hospital is required
EXPERIENCE:
  • Some previous Customer Service experience is required
  • 6 months experience in a patient care setting (especially previous hospital experience) is strongly preferred
