Plant Breeding Intern – Hawaii

From your first day as an intern, you will be a contributing member of the Monsanto Hawaii team with meaningful responsibilities, which will provide you with a realistic look at a future career with Monsanto.  You will gain valuable experience as well as developmental feedback along the way. 

Monsanto Hawaii has openings with their trait integration and breeding program on the island of Oahu and Maui.  This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing a career in agriculture, biology, ecology, process engineering, entomology, or any other related science disciplines to experience working with scientists, researchers, agronomists, plant breeders in a leading agricultural company.  As an intern you will be involved in a variety of activities such as assisting with trial preparation, participate in various field operations such as data collection, planting, harvesting, supervising of field crew, etc.  The intern will be assigned a project that he/she will develop, complete and present to their peers, management and staff.  Some of the potential projects that will be assigned are listed below:

Potential Projects
  • Use data to improve project success; identifying methods to streamline operations and reduce waste
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) related, studying the effectiveness of different control methods
  • Survey insect and local plant populations to understand quantity and life cycle of beneficial insects and pests
  • Cover cropping of different species and evaluating their effectiveness as soil amendments
  • Soil sampling, mapping and implementing variable rate fertility programs
  • Design and implementation of natural areas with native plants to encourage a refuge for bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects
Required Qualifications
  • Ability to commit to a 3 month period (~12 weeks) during the period of May - September
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at a 4 year accredited US based institution with plans to return to your program following the assignment
  • GPA of 3.0
  • Detail and results oriented with the ability to work in a team based environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated organizational and problem solving skills
  • Excellent computer skills related to data acquisition and record keeping
  • Valid driver's license
